This is where my lack of comic book reading potentially hurts my understanding of actual canon. I'm really only familiar with her from the Justice League cartoons as well, and on there she was an alien (Thanagarian) and Vandal Savage had nothing to do with her story at all. Plus, having he be from Thanagar ending up making for one of the best stories in the entire show, when it was revealed that she had started out as a deep cover operative for Thanagar and not some lost one-of-her-kind alien when the Thanagarians show up and start to take over.
Plus, it provided one of my favorites scenes in the whole series...

The original origin story of Hawkgirl is similar to that of the show in that Hawkgirl and Hawkman are ancient Egyptians that are killed with a knife made of Nth metal, by Hath-Set, which causes them to continuously be reborn throughout time. But in the comics, Hath-Set is not Vandal Savage. Their origin story was later reconned to them being from Thanagar, which became canon.
What pisses me off more is Vandal's origin story. In the comics he is far older than ancient Egypt. He was born some 50,000 BC, and is actually Cro-Magnon. When he killed those people in his first scene on Flash with a flint knife, I geeked out. But then when they said he was from ancient Egypt is was like

At the start of this week's episode, the screen flashed through a few city names before stopping on Norway. You couldn't read them unless you paused or slomoed your screen.
Some of the cities: Portland, Central City, Washington D.C., Nanda Parbat, and... Baton Rouge.
