Agreed. He was supposed to be hated, which made him a pretty solid character.

How could you not love his awkward creepiness, his being terrified of Joe, or how he was always trying to gain respect in the office (while never earning any)?

I loved Kevin, but didn't like how they literally tried to make him retarded. It was awesome when Holly thought he was retarded, and that's one of my favorite episodes of the show, but toward the end it seemed like they just made him more and more stupid.

But when a show like that goes on for that long, everyone eventually sort of becomes a caricature of themselves. Michael and Dwight were two glaring examples of that (though I still liked both of them).

I quit watching the office right around the end of season 5, so I'm not an officianado when it comes to knowledge of the show....but was it ever explained what Kevin's credentials are? Like you said they eventually just tried to make him dumber and dumber until it got to the point where he was barely a functioning human. With all that in mind, not only does he work in a corporate environment, but he works in frickin finance doing math all day and working the books for a major company. How would he have held that job more than a few weeks? Do Angela and Oscar basically just do all the real accounting work?

I think it's all just centered around that one particular office and its shenanigans. And that's obvious, but what I mean is that Kevin is obviously a functioning person who was intelligent enough to get the job, he's just the office idiot, so to speak. But they throw a nod to his intelligence every now and then, which I like.

For example, one day Holly literally thinks Kevin is mentally handicapped, but then we also see him take down Darryl and Andy's money when they were playing that Dallas board game. Same thing early on when they make nods to Kevin being an adept gambler.

They did this with Michael a lot too. Obviously he was a great salesman, and capable enough to be made branch manager, yet they have him building hamster city and literally driving his car into a lake because his GPS told him to. I wasn't a huge fan of those moments (and HATED the GPS lake thing), but then every now and then they show you how truly great he is at his job...like when he wins over Tim Meadows at Chili's, or when he and Dwight go to that conference (when Jim is in Stamford) and Jan is dicking all over him but then he magically gets the Hamermill account so that they can sell Hammermill products. We see him say shite like "hippity hoppity, give me the zoppity" but then we also see him start to take clients from Dunder Mifflin to the point of them begging him to come back as branch manager.

I just felt like toward the end, they only had the retard Kevin moments and never justified them with anything positive anymore.

Nellie, at the beginning, was far and away the most intolerable character.

Robert Kalifornia, while Nellie was on the show was horrible with his strange attraction. However, the end of season 8 was generally horrific so it makes sense.

Pam, post baby, post Michael.

I thought Gabe was hysterical at times and served as a good character of derision for everyone else.

I don't mind Patrice O'Neal. But I didn't like him on The Office. Thankfully he wasn't on there much.

Roy was terrible also...forgot to put him earlier.

Agreed, though he does have one of my favorite lines from the show: What's up, ma'nerds?

The crew guy who had the hots for Pam. Worst story arc ever.

Nellie sucked arse at first, she got a lot funnier towards the end.

There was one episode in the final season where Kevin, Oscar and Angela are at Angela's house (can't remember why). Kevin noticed the Senator treating Angela and Oscar like shite, and when he left their house he told the Senator he was a bad person for treating people who cared about him like that.

I realize of course that scene sticks out because Kevin redemption moments were scarce towards the end
