Well that garbage is one of the biggest selling bands of all times.

This past VooDoo fest in New Orleans I caught Eric Singers drum stick... that was awesome. My own Detroit Rock City moment.

And their music fricking sucks. I'm usually a big fan of you like what you like, but Kiss really pisses me off. They are to music what Jersey Shore is to current TV. It's just garbage with absoutely no merit.

Let me guess, you're one of the resident td.com music snobs who only likes obscure pencil neck britpop bands who whine about how life sucks, stares at the floor and acts like they're too cool for thier audience.

KISS is band who put out competent rock songs and spectacular live shows. It's about the experience as much as anything.

But some people are just too cool to just enjoy it for what it is.

I have been a devout Kiss Army member since 1981.
I took my kids to the Kiss concert in Pcola last year and they loved it.

Stones can do that.....hmmm...name another one.

To even suggest a comparison between The Rolling Stones and Kiss is blasphemy. I could give you several paragraphs of music instruction beginning with Jazz through Bee Bop through Blues through R and B through Country through Rock and Roll to explain how the Stones actually incorporated roots music and essentially invented an entirely new genre of exciting and still relevant music. But if someone enjoys silly, adolescent pap there's nothing I nor anyone else can do for them.

Selling millions of albums and packing arenas doesn't necessarily require talent or invention. Arguably, it merely requires producing the lowest common denominator.

It might not require it, but to argue that Stanley and Simmons are not talented is just stupid.

While I'm not going to apologize for liking some obscure bands, if you read the 2010 music kicks arse thread (or any music thread), I'm one of the leading critics of "life sucks" bands. I believe music, partiuclarly live music, is a joyous expeirence. Most of the bands I love reflect that joy. And I'm pro-American bands. DBT! DBT! DBT!

And I own every Stones and Beatles album, both of whom are really, really obscure. I like music regardless of its popularity or lack thereof. There are some commercially unsuccessful bands I hate and some I love. There are some commercially successful bands I love and hate as well. Their record sales have no bearing on my enjoyment of their music either way (except that I do prefer smaller venues when I see a band live - so it's a better expeirence if they aren't too popular, but that's not something to hold against the band - I'd just rather be in a club than an arena but what can you do?)

But Kiss sucks. Yes, I've heard those songs, JT. I don't live under a rock. They suck. They are very talented - very talented marketing men. Their songs are painfully stupid, and not in the tongue in cheek way. I absolutely hate them. You like 'em, good for you. I think Gene Simmons is laughing at you all the way to the bank, but you like what you like. I just happen to think what you like sucks balls, in this case.

I tend to hate most bands that spend more time crafting their marketing image than the music. Slipknot can die in a fire as well. And I stand my comment that Kiss is merely the Wiggles for grown ups. Excpet that I sort of like the Wiggles.

I hate to bring it to this, but then it shouldn't be very hard for you to write something at least as good.

Kiss influenced a gazillion bands along the way - in terms of songs, concert production, marketing, etc.

You might also dislike Ace Frehley's guitar playing, but again, he was an influence on so many people.

To name but 2 - Rivers Cuomo of Weezer cites KISS as his alltime favorite band with Goin' Blind as his favorite song ever. And it is a spectacular classic.

Dimebag Darrell, late, of Pantera as well.

A lot of the people on here who badmouth Kiss have probably never heard of a little compilation album called "Hard To Believe".

I love to make fun of Kiss, but all of their early albums (debut - Alive II) are still super special to me. So many great tunes!

I have seen hundreds of shows since my 1st concert in 1977 when I saw KISS in Shreveport.

There are so many bands that copies KISS in concert. I saw U2 in concert...they ripped off KISS alot.

People keep going back to see them live because it is STILL as good a live show EVER!

But of course......some people dont like anything that is popular! Or that millions love.

I think Baloo's problem is simply that he finds good melodies unacceptable.

ETA: or stated another way, he finds the presence of hooks to be proof of music being bad.

This is why I don't like Kiss as well.

Who are you to say that? I've just read this whole thread. I don't like KISS personally. I don't mind those who do. All baloo is saying is that he hates them. He's not saying you should too. He's not saying that they're musically untalented and can't sing a note...he's merely saying that he doesn't like them. I'm in the same boat. You then claim he doesn't like "good" melodies...who's to say what's "good"? That's up to the individual. Millions of people like Ke$ha at the moment too, and I don't think I need to elaborate on that.

Baloo never claimed that he could or that he is a songwriter. He's allowed to dislike something without being required to one-up it. If I don't like Joyce, does that mean I have to try to write something better?

Me too. In addition to discussing music on and off with him for 5 years now.

I think he somewhat explicitly said that they were not talented.

You're right. I should have said "melodies". And again, this is based on a long history with him.

He didn't say just that he didn't like it. He said that they were talentless musically. If that's true, then perhaps it would be easy for him to replicate their success.
