Here's my issue with the ending and I'm curious about your opinion.

Raylan went back to the prison to break the news about Ava face-to-face because they were "brothers" from the coal mines and all that. But everything Raylan is telling Boyd is a lie, so doesn't break the "bro code?" Sounds like he has more kinship to Ava than he has to Boyd.

You are right in that his reason for going to see Boyd in prison was to convince him that Ava was dead, and thus he wouldn't go looking for Ava or his kid if he ever got out. But once he got there, and started his banter with Boyd, I think he was once again reminded that they had so much history together.

While Raylan was lying to Boyd about Ava, I don't think he was putting up a front when he had the look in his eyes while he was lying to Boyd. They may have both been on opposite sides of the law, but they were also as close to being friends as an outlaw and lawman could possibly be. And most of all, they knew each other better than probably anyone else could possibly know them (including themselves).

I'm caught up in the moment, but that may have been the best finale of a show I've seen in a long time, maybe ever.

Interesting. Justified is easily my favorite show ever, and I thought it was terrible.

Damn, that sucks for you. If Justified is one of your favorite shows ever, how did you not like the finale? Justified is probably a top three show all time for me, and I loved the finale. It seemed a little anticlimactic and bittersweet at first, but after some brief reflection, it all made sense. Thought it was a great ending/sendoff to the series.

I did too. The only thing I didn't like was Winona ending up with another man (because you know Raylan didn't leave her). But I guess the good thing about that was that it reminded me how much of a bitch she actually was from all the way back in season 2.

No, but Yost said he did in an interview. He said after the wrote the script he was like "crap, we forgot to mention that Bob didn't die".

All in all a very good finale that also still leaves the door open in the future for a movie if they choose to revisit these characters...

I'm thinking that Raylan's guess about Duffy sneaking Ava out in exchange for the $9 mil is probably what really happened.

Of course it is. He had a big compartment to hide her and the money. The fact that it was a dog grooming van would fool the k9 cops into thinking that was what set the dogs off.

I doubt he had Ava and the money. I'm pretty sure he came back and got the money later after the heat from the search cooled off.

That guy looked strange as hell too. I'm ok with them not ending up together. Follows the plot they established up until the last few episodes where they almost forced them together for a story book ending. Winona being with someone else was true to the character.

ETA: Going to miss the great banter between Raylan, Art, Boyd, and Gutterson.

That compartment they showed could fit both for a short period of time IIRC. The genius was the dog grooming van though.

he got Ava out in exchange for the location of the money, went back later and got it. That's my take on it anyway.

That is what Raylan said so I'm sure that's what we need to take as what happened.

It wasn't about a bro code. It was about Raylan feeling some sense of obligation to tell the lie to Boyd's face, to make Boyd believe it, to make Boyd move on and to protect Ava from Boyd's potential wrath or intrusion into her life. He could have simply sent word, but he wanted to make sure the message sunk in, that Boyd believed it, that the whole mess was behind them, and that he got one last chance to see Boyd and close that chapter in his life. It was about a great deal more than a "bro code" and the last line indicates that as it symbolizes so much more than the fact that they dug coal together.

And again, this is as much a favor to Boyd as to Ava. Boyd was obsessed with that money and with Ava and his revenge. He can let that go now.

They were never really back together, honestly. I thought it was appropriate to have them still separated. They love each other in their own ways, but the truth is that Winona will always come second to the job and that is not a healthy relationship. I felt like if the writers had them end up together, it would have been a bit out of character for both of them, though that whole episode where Winona is back in town and basically begs Raylan to take her back kind of threw me.

Sorry, but I will always remember Winona as being a selfish bitch. If you don't think that, then you need to go back and rewatch season 2. She did almost redeem herself in season 4. But her leading Raylan on yet again in the hotel room this season, and then ending up with another man just reinforced my initial thoughts about her.

There was a lot more to Winona not being able to stay with Raylan than just with Raylan supposedly putting the job above her. Heck if I remember correctly, the first time she left him he had put her first by going to Glynco as an instructor.

Really Winona was just BSC, and didn't know what in the hell she wanted.

To be fair, on that point, it was 4 years later. They probably tried to make it work but couldn't. Not saying there isn't fault on Winona, but that relationship was poison all along.
