I've long stated that it's supremely overrated, and it really doesn't age well. The acting is terrible outside of a few actors.

I will say that its success led to other superior shows like the wire.

I disagree. I found the acting pretty good, overall, with notable exceptions. The actor playing AJ was just never in the game. They cast him as a kid. He actually got worse over time, but that was as the role grew.

Ditto for Jamie Lynn Sigler - although her eye candy value really shot up over the show's run. When I watched it with Mrs. Midnight, I commented, "Do the producers know they didn't do Sigler any favors by casting such a good actor as Finn (Will Janowitz)?"

So many of her scenes were with Nurse Jackie (who was all over the place) and AJ (terrible actor), which concealed it some.

That's what hurt AJ the most, as he was in so many scenes with Gandolfini - like standing Olivier next to Keanu.

Edie Falco absolutely killed that role as Carmela. She was great.

What a great line, that kid just never had a shot. Why wouldn't they just recast after season 1 or 2...who cares about loyalty the kid couldn't act and he brought the whole show down. It also would've helped if he wasn't such a big role in many episodes.

They also should've recast him because he was supposed to be a football player and built like Gandolfini...not some emo kid. But ya know, maybe he never had the makings of a varsity athlete...

To be fair, she had a shite ton of scenes with Gandolfini - most of the time I think she held her own with him - I guess, for the show's overall intent. I also think she was doing the best she could to meet the script and character - most of the time.

And I don't blame her completely, but some of the silly side stories she was in - she didn't seem to always be in the scene - she (and the scene ) was stronger with Gandolfini than without, IMHO.

That's what I meant by "all over the place".

So far, not that impressed. After all I had heard about it, it just has not been very good. I will keep watching but please tell me it gets better

It's a completely overrated show. I respect its influence, but it pales compared to breaking bad, etc. The writing is nowhere near as sharp as it gets credit for and the storylines are never executed to their fullest potential.

It's a lot like mad men. It's not built to binge but it's just super watchable.

I just finished Mad Men from start to finish. I agree. It also had me a little off at first but I got into it and really enjoyed it. The ending of Mad Men was nothing spectacular but Im not sure there was anything spectacular there to do.

Here comes the idiots talking about how overrated it was when they just don't get it. Sorry there wasn't enough plot twists for you. Maybe more explosions would've done the trick.

The acting is superb in this show by the main cast. One of the best casts ever.

Yea it was too brilliant for us to fathom. Having a fish tell Tony in a dream that his friend was a rat is just ingenious writing.

It's a good show but nowhere close to the GOAT and never maximized it's dramatic potential imo...ie the series finale cop out.

Meh, that's your opinion and it's perfectly fine. I happen to think Breaking Bad is wildly overrated, that show was tedious for me. We all have our different tastes.

don't get me wrong... he was annoying. But to me that is what made him have an effective role in the show. A few of the people in Tony's family all were super annoying at different times.

his mom... super bitch
Janice... same

the only smart one appeared to be Tony's youngest sister who seemed to keep her distance from those whack jobs.

"You're not gonna believe this... he killed 16 Chekloslovakians... guy was an interior decorator."

"His house looked like shite."

I watched the Pine Barrens episode the other day.

Breaking Bad is all flash. I hate seeing it mentioned with brilliant shows like the Wire, Sopranos, or Mad Men.

Yea, Im going to have to disagree with you on this. Ive seen Mad Men and The wire and Breaking Bad was better than both of those to me.

Like someone said, its all opinion but Breaking Bad is one of the greats..

I didn't regret watching it, but by no means was it on the "great" level for me. And I'm more of a dialogue guy than an action guy in general.

Definitely character driven. Keep watching, it's one of the 3 greatest shows of all time.

To be honest, I rewatched some episodes from the first season a few months ago, and the first season seemed a bit dated and not as strong as season 2-4

When it first aired, no one had ever seen anything like it. You have to appreciate it for the ground it broke. I am sure it might not hold up as well since the nature of TV has changed & it probably isn't as far out there as it originally was. I still respect it as one of the GOATs though.

I agree to a point. I think there were mixed signals going on. The family scenes were shot with an almost sitcom (or family dramedy) vibe that I cannot believe was an accident - some of the gangsters were played straight, and at the highest level of acting (I'm thinking Vincent Curatola's "Johnny Sack" character here), while others were delivered with a campy, over-the-top style (Paulie and Sil), without - quite - drifting into parody.

At that point, you had Michael Imperoli's Gen-X gangster, Christopher, trying to get his button in a changing landscape - and, despite the obvious self-reference to breaking into television/movies/music by a gangster - did a decent, realistic job of portraying a drug addict trying to function within the surrealistic gangster landscape.

But, putting the pieces together, with whatever inconsistencies, just worked for lack of a better word. I agree it doesn't hold up quite as well as my 2 big GOAT contenders from approximately the same era: The Wire and The Shield.

But, however much I like The Shield and enjoy Chiklis' portrayal of Vic Mackey, Tony Soprano is the greatest television character and Gandolfini delivers the greatest performance since Lucille Ball playing Lucy Ricardo (possibly excepting Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock).

And that's about the highest praise I can give. That's the gold standard.
