Man, what an open slap in the face directed squarely at DC. There's more angst than MoS and BvS combined, with all the family pain being addressed, and yet it's still a fun film, and it has to be the brightest, most colorful film I've ever seen. Day-glo smoke, neon bubbles and people, etc.

Another shot at DC (and Suicide Squad)- the retro music is used properly, heard in-world, and is even used as a plot device, not just randomly added to the soundtrack for "coolness".

I remembered that I liked it, but it had been awhile since I saw it, and I must admit, this really is a blast to watch again.

I don't think it's a shot at DC just because Marvel made a good movie.

It is almost completely the exact opposite of a DC movie. The movie is overwhelmingly bright and colorful, go rewatch the intro fight scene. Multicolor laser blasts with multicolor smoke following the energy tracks... there are vivid red, orange, green and blue puffs of smoke whenever someone shoots. Color is oversaturated in almost every scene, unless it's dark in the forest (and even that is more vivid than DC's daylight scenes).
Yondu's revenge and escape looks like a kaleidoscope in motion.
There's humor and many expressions of simple joy of existence throughout the film, and it doesn't dampen the heavier emotional moments at all, it highlights them.

Every theme DC had tried to push out, this film was able to hit, and instead of various shades of gray, this is so tripped-out and vivid... and it works better than DC's approach. I feel for Peter, Drax and Yondu more than I do for Clark or Bruce, I feel their pain more, even though they make me smile and laugh more. I LIKE these guys more, and that seems amazing to me, because I grew up loving Superman and Batman way more than any Marvel characters, and I didn't know anything about these guys before the movies.

Have you seen Wonder Woman? I love shitting on DC as much as the next guy but they fixed a lot of the things you talked about.

That being said, GOTG2 was awesome. It was able to replicate everything that made the first one fun all while keeping it fresh.

I was surprised at how good it is. Usually sequels are a letdown and the first was a tough act to follow.

Yeah, I really liked Wonder Woman a lot.
I don't enjoy shitting on DC, they actually are my favorite characters. If both franchises made equally entertaining films, I would prefer the DC titles over the Marvel ones, because my attachment to those heroes run deeper.
And I don't think it's due to my being unfairly harsh on DC for putting those characters onscreen in a way I didn't expect; I WANTED to like those films, even halfway through them. I kept waiting for the moment to arrive, that would make me go "wow". It did come in Wonder Woman, and honestly, Wonder Woman showing up in BvS was the best part of that film.
But Wonder Woman was the first of the DC films that wasn't intentionally bleak and dismal, both in appearance and in tone.

I just don't see what you guys see. I'm sorry. Apart from Spider-Man: Homecoming, none of the MCU films have been up to snuff since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As the Honest Trailers voice said, it's okay to go 10 seconds without having to try to make us laugh.

What I was surprised by was the hate from critics

If anything they did what those fools usually want, build on character

I was pretty disappointed in it. It was okay, and fairly entertaining, but I felt like it was trying way too hard, and it felt excruciatingly long to me. I also didn't think the plot was very good either.

All in all, I was entertained, which is a good thing. But definitely disappointed since I thought the first one was pretty good.

GOTG2 wound up great but I would be lying if I wasn't concerned about it at first because there was so much emphasis on baby groot.

Yea it was a let down in my opinion. Felt a lot of the time they tried too hard with the comedy especially with Drax having more lines. Also with the bad guy being his father which was pretty weak and didn't seem to have anything to do with the MCU storyline.

Did anyone else have trouble following all the acronyms?

Oh Guardians - haven't seen either of those yet but most all of the other ones.

I thought it was pretty good. But I had no desire to go see it again at the movies like I did the first one. Like others said, they went a bit overboard with the comedy.

As much as I've mostly hated what DC has run out there, I don't think it was anything like that. I just think Marvel, and in particular, James Gunn has REALLY gotten this group so right. In no way is he ashamed of the source material, and in keeping in fun and light he's also able to go deeper in regards to the family stuff and it seems to work.

I think it was a fantastic idea to use the Walkman soundtrack as a plot device from the get-go. It was never just background music, but what was literally being played on site int he scene. Very cool. It was also a great way to add some "Earth" to this space story and a link for Peter and the viewers the whole time. And even though I did not enjoy the GOTG2 soundtrack as much at first, it's grown on me and I plat it all the time now.

I'm kind of in the Kevin Smith camp on this one. I REALLY liked this one, even as much as I liked the first one. This movie, more than most I've seen in a while, really makes me think about it quite often. Not exactly sure why, but I do.

Now...you want a shot at DC? Truth be told, when Ego smashes Peter's Walkman I cared 100x more about that loss than I did at any point in any of the DC movies, including Wonder Woman which I liked a lot. For 2 movie we grew to know just how much that item meant to him, and the loss of it MATTERED.

Waiting for the blueray...

The Guardians story does overlap with the other Marvel stories, but it's by far the most independent of the entire group. It's a fun and adventurous space fantasy, not at all reliant on Avengers or anything else.

If/when the bottom falls out of superhero movies, Guardians can definitely still keep running as "fun SF", and honestly, it's both funner and more adventurous than Star Wars is now.
-when I was little, before Empire came out, we used to fantasize about Han, Luke, Chewie, Leia and the droids exploring and having adventures in that great big galaxy, with the Millennium Falcon bringing them all around. We lost that with all the sequels, and even now, I don't see Rey, Poe and Finn having any standalone adventures, they are only going to be fighting the First Order and Snoke.

But the Guardians seem to be doing just that; flying around doing cool things. If you can imagine it, they can do it.

I don't know... do you do any editing of digital photos? Photoshop/Gimp, etc? I do. I do a good bit of editing with the camera RAW format, where you can get greater control and range.

Wonder Woman is a "normal" film, visually. We likely see about what was seen on set.

But BvS, MoS, and SS were faded. In BvS, you can't really tell if Wonder Woman is actually wearing a red and blue outfit, or if it's just a slight tint. The editing has washed it all out, I'd say the saturation levels are maybe around 25% (they're getting close to a B&W look).

Now, look at the difference, just looking at COLOR:

Yeah...I do actually.

I'm not arguing at all about that stuff...even if I know it'll trigger FewerKilometers and get him into this... The difference between a Snyder nightmare colored movie and what James Gunn put on screen (I actually think the best example of the colors was them arriving at Ego's planets and watching the bubbles fly by. Just incredible) is night and day...pun intended.

But I don't think it was done as a thumb in the eye of DC, if that's what you meant. I really think Marvel set a tone for their movies to look one way, and Zach Snyder seemingly has all of his look like that. I think it's much more that Snyder works in muted tones and "dark" imagery and most of the Marvel movies have not.

Now...if you say that Thor Ragnarak looks a lot like GOTG, I'd agree completely. I think they see Thor being a similar type universe and can go all psychedelic like that. The old comics were trippy as hell. I think it's a great move and will help the stand along Thor movies a ton.

I do remember someone a few years ago reinserting the color back into Man of Steel and showed just how muted it was. It was kind of shocking to see how much things were filtered to remove and sense of color from the palette.

Found it:

What if MoS was in color?

but seriously...

There were a few songs I felt were poorly chosen (will need to rewatch for the specifics), almost to the level of being picked by using a blindfold and a dart.
