Two very different directors.

They are, but not as different as you imply. Lynch and Waters are both interested in the seedy underbelly of the American dream. They point the camera where others would look away. The major difference is tone: Lynch is dark and brooding, lost in the weirdness of what we consider normal while Waters dives right in with the freaks and has a good laugh. The underbelly isn't horror, it's more fun.

I think a comparison of their aesthetics is actually right on point. It shows how one reacts to the perversion of American dream. Lynch shudders with revulsion over the betrayal and calls it a night mare. Waters likes the new dream and calls it his new reality.

I don't think you're doing justice to the extent of Lynch's sympathy with "flyover America"--the simple goodness that makes his heroes so compelling.

For Lynch, the American dream may be a lie, but it's a necessary and occasionally beautiful lie--a humane bulwark against ferocity, perversion, and nature.

I don't want to come off like I dislike Lynch. I love his films. I'm a big fan. But if I have to choose one, I choose Waters mainly because Lynch isn't the only guy with that particularly worldview. He's better at than most, but I'd still get my dark, creeping nightmares from someone. I don't think there's anyone like Waters.
