John Waters or David Lynch? Who you got?

John Waters has made films that I would call great but very artsy and controversial. David Lynch may be the best director at winding an intricate web, but sometimes I have a hard time finding my way out of. These are by far my two favorite directors, which is why I pose this question.

Those are two vastly different styles. Anyway Lynch for me.

And I agree, for whatever reason I find their works comparable. Lynch has always had an advantage in my mind.

Lynch

Lynch vs Cronenberg would be a more compelling subject for debate

Other than A History of Violence and The Fly, I am not a fan. But, I can certainly see how that could be a more balanced subject for debate.

I think we need a John Waters now more than ever. We live in a repressed era in which everything is polished to a sheen to make it more normal. Waters wasn't just offensive, he was gleefully offensive. His films were amateurish fun, and really felt like kids getting away with a prank while the parents weren't looking.

Could Pink Flamingos get made and/or distributed today? Also, Cry-Baby is an underrated classic.

I love Lynch, too, but we don't need another dour, dark filmmaker exploring humanity's underbelly. We need joyful, happy filmmakers reveling in the underbelly.

I'm considering going to Waters' Christmas show at the Civic. Not sure what to expect other than laughs. Met him once at Arthur Roger Gallery during some event. He's actually a pretty cool and friendly dude.

Somewhere out there in the world, John Waters just had a good chuckle.

I don't think Waters is really considered a "great" director. His claim to fame comes from his subject matter and general cultural aesthetic, not in his directorial abilities per se.

It might get made but would never see the light of day in a theater.

Have you ever seen another director create characters that are so culturally obscene and vilified, but that are loved by the viewers? That's why John Waters is so good at directing.

Videodrome??

Anyway, I actually think Lynch and Waters are more comparable than Lynch and Cronenberg--the former are both interested in the dark side and weirdness of "ordinary" America, as well as its goodness.

Lynch.

Two very different directors. Might as well compare Andrei Tarkovsky and Michael Bay.
