Even after he did Seinfeld his big stand-up show on HBO wasn't really on par with the stand-up that was going on at the time.

I'm not saying he has to be Richard Pryor and tell people to frick off...but there's no way he'd hold a candle to some guys today on the circuit.

But I think you can separate Jerry as the comedian from Jerry and the show. One was everything...the other - well, how can he afford to buy his Dad a Cadillac! We've seen his act! Even Jerry makes fun of himself as a stand-up.

I've seen him live, I've watched the show, and I watched the last special. I find him funny and enjoy his stuff. Maybe other people don't and that's fine. To each his own.

Those were literally all the jokes he wrote from the time he was in college to his first appearance on the tonight show. Wasn't even his best stuff. That's why the special was called Jerry BEFORE Seinfeld

Holy shite. I just watched it. Are people really bitching because Seinfeld made a special about his early career?

No...people are commenting that he might have been over-rated after the fact (as purely a comedian) becuase of his awesome show.

I mean he got some massive bogus shows stand-up after Seinfeld and raked in the dough because of the success of Seinfeld.

But I don't know why people can't separate the show from the stand-up comedian?

It was a show. It wasn't a hit because of Seinfeld stand-up material...period. It wasn't. His stand-up material was the shittiest part of the show in the soft intro.

Seinfeld and Leno were the top two comedians before they got their TV shows. It's not like Seinfeld lucked into a show in spite of his stand-up.

Well you don't get a show because you suck.

Hell Ellen was a top comedian too in the 80's.

But the show obviously elevated him to a status that he wouldn't remotely have gotten as a comedian.

Not remotely.

I saw a list online and they said top 15 comedians of all-time.

Jerry Seinfeld
Richard Pyror
Robin Williams
Lenny Bruce
Bill Cosby
Don RIckles
Bob Newhart
Eddie Murphy
Steve Martin
Louis C.K.
Rodney Dangerfield
Bob Hope
Bill Hicks
Jonathon Winter
Sam Kinison

And they had like Seinfeld Top 5? WTF?

His show has clearly influenced his stand-up legacy.

From that list, with the exceptions of Bruce and Hicks and one or two others, they all had TV or movie careers that boosted their legacies.

But you have to admit Seinfeld's stand-up was the worst part of the show - and if you watch his Tonight Show's they aren't any type of greatness that would have gotten him the type of fame - Seinfeld the TV show got him.

I mean...

Stuff like - "why do they sell hot dogs in packs of 8 while hot-dog buns are sold in packs of 10? Why is this? Can we get a summit, a conference...to bring the hot-dog people and the bun people together? Can we solve their differences?"

That's not gonna put you in the pantheon but for a hit show.

Didn't he start performing again years ago?

It was a formula that wasn't working. Which is why they got rid of it. Having Jerry tell one or two jokes in a taped format was much different than seeing him in front of a live audience on Carson or Letterman. And having to tailor the jokes to fit the plot of the show didn't help.

But evidently it will make you one of the most copied comics on tour.

There are a lot of blazing hot takes here.

The guy got a network sitcom because he killed it on the late night talk shows.
The sitcom, based around his life and his act, is the GOAT and has had a towering influence on comedy. I'm not going to hash out who wrote what - it isn't like he showed up on the set, read his script and went home. I'm sure at the very least he contributed jokes and hashed out ideas with the writers.
After the show went off the air 20 years ago, he's continued to make a mint doing standup.
If you've been making a great living for 30+ years doing standup, you're funny. End of story. It's like all the dopes who go on this site and say Kate Upton ain't fine - you make a great living as a swimsuit model and playing the hot chick in movies, you're fine.

And water is wet. Never thought he was funny in anything. The only thing that made seinfeld funny was the supporting cast.
