Both movies feature the machines sending a terminator back in time to prevent john connor from becoming the leader of the resistance. The resistance is able to also send back an agent of their own to foil said plan. The two then go on a chase across Los Angeles. It's basically the same movie. T2 just ups the ante by making the terminator more powerful and replacing kyle reese with a reprogrammed t-800 (though the hero is still outgunned by the villian). Both movies even end in a similar "factory" setting.
Holy shite DS, this is like when I realized that Indy's participation is completely irrelevant to the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

He is completely irrelevant!

Doesn't make it not about Indy, though. We don't experience the film in 3rd person - we see it almost exclusively through Indy's perspective - he's the reason we know about all of the events.
I mean, Nick Carraway is more or less irrelevant to the plot of The Great Gatsby, but is arguably the most important character because we experience it through his perspective.

And what about Forbidden Planet, then?
Leslie Nielson, Ann Francis, Walter Pidgeon.

Another vote for Blade Runner. Every frame of that film is a cinematic work of art.

I understand, but the point is if Indy doesn't make it across the pit after Alfred Molina takes the idol, then the events of the movie play out almost exactly the same way. Sure the fuel depot doesn't blow up, the big oafish guy doesn't meet a gruesome end after being shredded by a propeller, the Nazis take a little while longer to find the Ark, and we don't get that awesome Stunt show at Disney World. But the Nazis still take the arch to the island, open it, and get their faces melted off.

I thought I was agreeing that Indy's involvement is irrelevant to the main story - obviously his story and adventures, romance, etc., did not impact the journey of the Ark, possibly excepting it getting into the hands of "top men" with the U.S. government.
Ditto for Nick Caraway in Gatsby.

this is pretty fascinating. It's been a good while since I've seen it so my memory is sketchy. Would the nazis have found the ark if not for indy? Weren't they digging in the wrong place once, and also needed a specific piece of equipment that indy had?

They were, but there were only so many locations. Belloch would've figured it out. It was the length of the staff Indy had that put him in the right chamber. Salah even says they need to hurry because the Nazis were close to figuring it out.

Very solid movie, my favorite of the trek movies.
It's in the top 10.

Good movie. When they put that slug in the guys ear it was truly terrifying.

agree with your list but i would add serenity and 2001
I would agree on 2001 but I know that most folks don't find it very entertaining.

For the sake of sheer entertainment, it is imperative that Independence Day be added as one of the best.

Blade Runner is a good choice. I'm gonna toss Inception out there though.

True, but if it weren't for Indy, the ark would have stayed on that island after melting all the nazi's. It would have only been a matter of time until more nazis tracked down the last location of that group and reclaimed the ark. Thanks to Indy, it ended up securely locked away in that warehouse.
