This was on tv yesterday. I find this to be one of the more underappreciated westerns out there. I remember seeing it in the theaters and I had barely heard of it but loved it. The build up to the final fight was awesome and it delivered. Duvall and Costner were excellent together.. Wish they made more of these types of westerns still.

Damn strong western, damn strong actors. Annette Benning looked great too.

It's one of the better modern westerns but I think sometimes people tend to forget it when mentioning the True Grit remake, Unforgiven, Tombstone, etc.

We desperately need more westerns like it right now. I'm hoping Westworld on HBO catches on enough that it stokes some of those good non-Tarantino western fires.

Not nearly as under appreciated as 3:10 to Yuma.

Yes. It gets flack for irrational Costner hate.

No, I'd say it's rated about where it should be. It's good but not great. As pointed out, it isn't as good as Tombstone, Unforgiven, etc.

310 to Yuma sucked in my opinion. Nothing happened. Very anticlimactic. Could have been much better. Remake should have ended a lot differently.

I didn't care for it at first. I still don't think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I like it better with a little hindsight.

Yup. That movie was a massive bore. Tombstone without any charisma really.

Love Open Range.

What were the gripes about Costner? I thought he was fine in it.

And I liked 3:10 to Yuma, but can see why some people wouldn't. It's not as good as OR or the others listed in here.

I still need to see Unforgiven. That's one I avoided back in the day (wasn't a huge western fan).

Not him in that movie, but it came out in the post-Postman/WAterworld time period where no one wanted to watch stuff with Costner. It's irrational. He's always solid (we both like those movies), and Open Range is actually really good, a great modern Western not far behind Jesse James, Unforgiven, etc. It's in that group.

Gotcha. Yeah, I remember when Kevin Costner = long, semi-boring movie.

But they are still good/great movies.

And another thing about Open Range is that it is a fricking gorgeous movie. The scenery in some of the shots is amazing.

3:10 to Yuma is probably my favorite Wester. Appaloosa is up there too (and very under appreciated).

Yea, we watched it again and enjoyed it as usual. Robert Duvall is one of my favorite actors and I though Costner had one of his better performances as well.

Why do people hate Costner?

Open range was solid imo. Like Costner and love Duval. I wish he had done more westerns in his younger days. Gus I one of my favorite characters of any tv show, movie or mini series ever.

Good Western, I wouldn't call it great but I love watching it.
