We've now heard from a source close to Warner Bros. that the studio is planning to make a trilogy of films based on Akira - all the better to do justice to Otomo's sprawling dystopian sci-fi yarn, perhaps.

Most intriguingly of all, we're told that Christopher Nolan has met with a previously attached filmmaker (who we can't name here) within the past three months to talk about the project.

quote:

It was recently announced, of course, that Nolan's next film is out in July 2017. As ever, it's a project shrouded in secrecy. Could that film be Akira? It's a far-fetched notion, perhaps, but its positioning as a summer film certainly suggests that Nolan has something major in store, and a big-budget adaptation of Akira could fit that bill. And while Nolan has the kind of industry clout to make just about anything he wants, his prior relationship with Warner - and his history with Leonardo DiCaprio on Inception - might add weight to the Akira theory.

I've read that he'll most likely produce the film, not direct.

It'll probably be a bunch of white people, and then all of the SJW's will cry racism. Pretty much the same way it worked out with The Last Air Bender and Dragon Ball Evolution.

For once, I am in complete agreement with Carson.

Please don't do this.

This really doesn't need to happen. Aside from the obvious white washing that will inevitably occur, the final act is completely unadaptable in live-action format.

Exactly. It can't be done. There is no way to have Tetsuo transforming into a giant tumor and have it work which means they'll change it and completely frick the entire premise up.

They'll just change it like Snyder did with the octopus in Watchmen.

I don't see it working out and looking good. It'll be changed to some kind of power overload explosion rather than the tumor. I don't think the mutation aspect will work.

I am likely overly negative since I think the entire idea is bad though.

As long as they have the motorcycle, I'm cool with it.
