The thing is, if we're honest, Llewin is kind of a dick.

that's how i felt. i often have a hard time feeling sympathy for dicks who end up in bad spots due to their behavior

took me a LONG time to appreciate high fidelity for this reason

I originally went to see the movie based on the soundtrack and was blown away. If you go into expecting a hero's journey, you'll be disappointed. But once you except that Llewyn is a borderline sociopath living in an extremely cynical atmosphere, sit back and relax.

The part that always gets me is when he explodes at the dinner table. You finally see how broken he is inside and start to empathize.

Great movie, but its definitely not for everyone. If you are a fan of the period's music, scene, and culture then its a must watch.

ETA: Goodman kills it.

Yep! You see how much the death of his partner has affected him. He doesn't really have anyone to talk to for long periods of time, so it all stays bottled up

The characters of the Gorfeins and their friends are so real. Just these good-hearted academics who adore their adopted beatnik.

I've watched it 3 times now and gets better with every viewing. First time I watched it it seemed very un-Coen.

On a side note I finally watched Burn After Reading last Friday Night and I was pleasantly surprised. I remember it being viewed as one of the weaker Coen movie. All of the actors were spot on.

He's a total dick and it's why I just can't enjoy this movie as much as others. Now his ex is kind of a bitch too because it takes two to get pregnant and she blames it all on him, but he really doesn't care about anyone else and him getting beat up at the end was karma for his dickishness.

Mostly this. Ain't nobody got time for a dreary movie about unlikable and mostly uninteresting characters. If he was a real person, everyone who knew him would be bored by that story and not want to spend 2 hours hearing him talk about it. But I'm supposed to enjoy it?
I would probably be able to better appreciate the music and quality of the film making on a second viewing with much lower expectations than I had for the first viewing, but why bother?

Why did I bother typing all this is an equally valid question.

I, along with many in this thread, love this movie. If he is unlikable to you, so be it, but he is one of my most liked characters ever. So, don't go dragging something through the mud just because you don't have a liking for it.

It's an incredible story about an incredible struggle, and there are many subtle things that make this movie great.

That is a better question. Go on somewhere else with your shallow self

I read this in the voice of Llewyn Davis. It's like the two of you were separated at birth.

Maybe I should watch this again. I remember it being really boring.

This movie to me is very similar to a Serious Man, where it's pretty depressing and there isn't a lot of humor.

There is plenty of humor in a Serious Man, and Inside Llewyn Davis.

We laughed pretty hard during Llewyn Davis. His discomfort around everyone (especially the singing soldier) was pretty funny.

Well then I'm glad I overcame our common birth defect to live a happy life that doesn't grant me the time to sit there and wallow with Llewyn for no reason.

You sound really sensitive. Sorry I interrupted your love fest with Llewyn Davis.

Oh, to be shallow would be great, but that's the first time anyone ever accused me of it.

Just watched again last night. I've now seen it probably close to 10 times. And every time, I can't stop watching. I love everything about it. You can't convince me anyone other than Oscar Isaac would have done that role such justice.

Watched it again today (probably up to 6 by now). Isaac killed this role and his interactions with Jean (Carey Mulligan) are my favorite. So many moving scenes (his father's facial expressions when Llewyn sings to him are haunting). Agree on the fantastic soundtrack. Definitely one of my all time favorite films.
