I do not understand the hate for this movie. It is just a fun movie. I think if it was not an Indiana Jones movie and all of the unattainable expectations that came with after 20 years, it would have been considered a good movie but most haters - just like Superman Returns, another movie I really enjoy.

Indiana Jones being attached to it had the opposite effect on me - it ensured I was more likely to enjoy this movie. They could show Indiana Jones eating a sandwich for 2 hours and I would enjoy it. It's freaking Indiana Jones.

The fridge scene was admittedly ridiculous but at the time, I just enjoyed the spectacle of it. I still do. The throwback quips and gags to the original trilogy, bringing back the original female love interest, and appropriately aging Indiana to when the Russians were the true enemy were all awesome. I hope they make 6 more of these movies.

I agree that's a large factor in the hate but it wasn't a good movie.

I went into it with low expectations and enjoyed it for what it was. It was supposed to be campy, cheesy, and ridiculous.

I enjoyed the movie in theaters (though it pissed me off a little), and even get some joy out of it if I catch some of it on TV. It's certainly not AS bad as most people think it is IMO. That being said...similar to the Patriot discussion going on right now in that thread, it's just really, really fricking stupid.

And though IJ movies require suspension of belief, there were just SO frickING MANY things that bugged the frick out of me and were laughably stupid. This were some of my original thoughts about this movie on this board:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are plenty of unbelievable occurrences in all the movies, I don't think that's why everyone hates this one. It sounds like it was just a terrible movie all around.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's my thing. Any IJ movie requires a suspension of belief. But KotCS just took that suspension, threw it overboard in the middle of the ocean, tossed an inflated raft into the water, then took out a gun and shot the raft, then was all like "lol j/k" and threw down a rope to pull up the suspension, and just as suspension got to the railing, it cut the rope and let it fall back into the water, and as it drowned in the water, KotCS turned the ship so that it got eaten up by the ship's giant propellers.

I mean for frick's sake:

- the shootouts from about 15 feet away
- the warehouse scene
- the nuke/fridge
- the ants
- the chase/monkey/vines scene
- the car/boat/waterfall scene
- maybe more, but that's all I can remember off the top of my head

Even still, I wanted to like this movie SO much. But by the time the waterfall scene came around, and three times....three goddamn times, they went over the edge in the fricking CAR and all was well...I was ready to walk out at that point.

And I'm pretty easy on movies too. As long as they're not ridiculous and they keep me entertained, I'm good. But even I struggle to find good things about this movie. That's saying something.

I've always agreed with that, but it even pushed those boundaries a bit too far for my tastes. And I'm fairly easy to please with movies.

I believe George Lucas had a good bit of creative input into the movie, which really explains a lot.

If it wasn't an Indiana Jones movie it would have likely bombed and you'd probably already have forgotten about it.

It was a steaming pile of donkey shite landing on your head in the middle of a field in rural Minnesota in January. That's what that movie was.

Considering he created the entire Star Wars universe, Willow, and Indiana Jones to begin with, I would think the creative input of George Lucas would be a very good thing.

You would think so, wouldn't you? Unfortunately, you'd be wrong.

Well, let's see. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana somehow rides on top of a submerged submarine for God knows how long. The boulder scene at the beginning was also over the top.

In Temple of Doom, they ride a freaking inflatable raft from an airplane through air and land safely on a mountainside. And a guy also rips out peoples' hearts and they continue to live after he does so.

In Last of the Crusade, there is no possible way he survives that tank that ran off the cliff, yet there is somehow appears behind his father and friends.

Each movie is way over the top. The latest was no different, just a far more cynical younger generation.

Didn't we just have a Mizzoukills thread that explained why it was actually plausible?

*edit* here it is LINK
