i haven't watched the OT since possibly the middle of the prequel run? it's been over a decade

and goddamn ESB is seriously one of the American classics

i was going to make a thread a few days ago when i watched Star Wars to defend it (B/c people do criticize it unfairly in retrospect) but the jump from Star Wars to ESB was massive, from set design to graphics and all other aspects of production (and obviously, the story, plot, etc)

it also has the best music of the 3 movies

what plot and story? you should have said character development like everyone else.

Here is what happened in ESB:

Cool battle in the snow, bro

Training

look, a unicorn in space!

:blah: :blah: :blah:

"I am your father"

End

Star Wars is the better film but Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of the two.

Just like Raiders of the Lost Ark is the better film, but The Last Crusade is my favorite of the two.

The ending score that leads into the closing credits is one of my favorite pieces of music written for any movie ever.

Empire is easily the best SW film and is definitely my favorite film of all time.

And one of the best films - of any genre - of all time. Very few films with a Science Fiction setting (and I'm in the camp that Star Wars is much more "Space Fantasy" than true "Science Fiction" from a genre standpoint, but Empire comes the closest to the genre) can claim this. Metropolis, The Day the Earth Stood Still, 2001, Empire, Alien, Blade Runner, The Wrath of Khan - that's probably your short list of the classics, with newer films like Moon and Ex Machina - maybe, nudging into that crowd.

You're out of your damn mind. ESB is a vastly superior film in almost all aspects.

Greatest music in cinema history if you ask me. Han solo and the princesss, The city in the clouds theme is just freaking amazing to this day it still hits the feels. Also Yoda theme is really awesome when lifts the ship from the swamp.

As I've said before:

ESB is one of the greatest movies of all time across genres.

The best decision George Lucas ever made was teaming up with Lawrence Kasdan.

Without Kasdan you don't get Raiders or ESB.

Can't wait to see where he takes the new trilogy.

I watched the OT about a month or two ago. Empire Strikes Back was probably my favorite because of its ability to build tension and hype without resolving it. They did a great job of not really having a beginning or end. You're forced to jump right into the events, catch a glimpse of what our old friends from the last movie are up to, then get left on a cliffhanger which will no doubt pick up in the next film.
I think that it was masterfully written in that way. It really helped to create/shape the Star Wars Universe. Lucas didn't hold your hand through the little details so you understand the bigger picture, but he lets you theorize a lot of things for yourself.
He also does an interesting job of throwing in very tiny details which become commonplace in the universe despite getting very little screen time. Example: as a kid, I knew what an A-wing was. I even had a toy of one. When I watched the OT, I noticed a fairly big lack of screen time of the ship. In fact, the only time I saw one at all was when it was hit, crashed into and destroyed a Star Destroyer (I googled to confirm it was an A wing that hit the Destroyer. I didn't confirm that they didn't get anymore screen time. But they were definitely featured far less than X and Y wings). But this little bit shows that there's another fighter type out there. Assuredly there was more than one. So there are pilots trained on it, it has advantages and weaknesses over the other types of ships, etc. it opens up a can of worms. The lack of in-movie development seems intentional to show that it's a massive universe that can't all be fit onto screen in 6-9 short hours.

One thing I have not been able to figure out, though: Why do TIE fighters not have hyperdrive? The rebels assume it's because they are small fighter ships while the Rebels themselves have fighters capable of deep space travel? Why would The Galactic Empire have less-capable ships than a small group of rebels who haphazardly gave crucial roles to wherever was conveniently around at the time roles were being handed out?

It's questions like this that keep me up at night.

Attitude goes a long way...ESB Leia was hotter than golden slave ROTJ Leia IMO. Girls shouldn't do drugs. Hallie Berry is in her 50's and butter still melts off her nips.
