Okay, I just realized that this means The Motion Picture. I retract my comment. Carry on, then.

Yeah - he's talking about the range of "real" ST movies, not the stuff since Nemesis.

Figured Ace would back me up there. I'm pretty sure weve had that conversation before in another thread.

BTW, I finally watched Moon last month. I'd seen it thrown around a bunch here, and rented it. Fantastic.

I was wondering

I thought every sci Fi fan liked that movie. It's boring, but in a good way

Wrath of khan is the better movie

As others said, Ex Machina is out now. The Martian with Matt Damon is coming out at the end of the year. It's like Apollo 13 meets Hard Sci-Fi. The Expanse TV series on Syfy this fall is based of a good hard sci fi book series. Have you seen Oblivion?

I hadn't realized he's the director. We share a lot of the same opinions.

I also have to say, if you're really into Science Fiction and lament that there aren't more hard SciFi films, you should really start reading books. I've read some FAN frickING TASTIC books that have almost been detrimental to my enjoyment of SciFi films due to the massive scale that the books can tackle vs a 2-3 hour film. A good list to start if you're into hard sci fi Space Operas:

The Commonwealth Saga
The Foundation Series
The Expanse Series
Revelation Space

Also, Neal Stephenson's new book is coming out in a couple weeks. It's called Seveneves and I'm anticipating it being very good.

quote:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years.

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . .

Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

Moon is one of the best science fiction films in years, no question.

We agree on a lot of things, just not this.

I'm not a big fan of either Insurrection or Nemesis - but they're both watchable. "Real" Star Trek is a great example of hard sci fi, with a good dose of adventure and fun.

Generations was cumbersome, no question, but was executed well in the grand scheme of things. First Contact might be the 3rd best ST film - I put it fourth, sentimentally, but is The Voyage Home really better? Heck, on some days, FC might be better than TSFS AND TVH, making it second - although that batch, along with the much maligned TMP are the best of the crop.

And where do we rank Galaxy Quest?

I love galaxy quest. it's the greatest compliment to star trek tos as well as an excellent parody of the fan loyalty that makes it special

i'll back off first contact a little bit, if only because the borg are a menacing threat; however, the time travel aspect (why they had to time travel at the location with all of the federation ships) as well as the ending confrontation with the queen are incredibly nonsensical.

the really good question is

Star Trek the Motion Picture or Wrath of Khan (of course I'm going to vote Khan)

and

last crusade or temple of doom (temple of doom by a mile) - related to the Jurassic park thread

Andromeda Strain.

Very hard sci-fi. And when the book and film hit, we were heavily into the space race.

One of the better book/film combos out there, I might add.

Wrath of Khan is one of the best films, regardless of genre. It has something for everyone. Obviously fans of TOS are likely to enjoy it the most, but it is a better film than TMP. TMP only had about an hour of plot (and that makes sense) - so, instead of fluffing that up with a half dozen character development sequences, even catching up with the characters, whatever - they chose to extend the gorgeous special effects space travel scenes - almost like he was trying to make up for how bad TOS looked at times, either in space or with the budget limitations on their effects, generally, in the 1960s.

Regardless, the film is unfairly criticized, when it has a classic Trek story (eerily similar to the plot of the TOS episode, The Changeling, which had a similar, although much smaller Terran probe merged with an alien probe), and for that part of it, was very well done.

I was going to debate you on this - but neither film is particularly "hard" sci-fi. I enjoy Last Crusade better, but, much like TMP, I think Temple of Doom is unfairly criticized.

I don't think they're sci fi at all, it's just a good topic of debate since you brought up raiders in the other thread
