This is one of the things Fallon does. If he can keep it fresh like this then he will be fine.

Saw that the other night and laughed my arse off.

I just don't get the appeal of late night talk shows in 2014. The whole format is tired and stale.

It's the skits, not the monologues

Its both. The days of a long, drawn out monologue like Johnny used to give are over...but you still can't make the monologue of The Tonight Show an after-thought. Carson kicked arse in the monologue, the skits, and the interviews. Jimmy is going to kick arse (for the most part) in the skits & viral stuff...but he can't just lean on all of that. He's got to be able to give a solid monologue and have interviews where he doesn't come across as a fan.

Jimmy, like Conan, is going to be a change of pace at 11:30. IMO, he'll adapt better than Conan did and I don't see NBC kicking him to the curb in 6 months even if the ratings are garbage. However, he's getting a cushion now due to the newness of his show and the Olympics.

His interviewing skills is what makes him so hard to watch. When he's not acting like a 16 year old girl feigning over his guests, he's interrupting them with some crap that nobody wants to hear.

Nobody was better than Carson with interviews, and the best left today, is Kimmel, imo. Gotta let the guests talk, and be able to guide them, while keeping the focus on them.

No doubt....and his timing was unmatched.

I like how the people who go out of their way to start a thread about their hatred for Fallon and others who post in it about their hatred don't have rustled jimmies but the people who like him and defend him do

Sounds like a case of rustled Jimmys to me

I like Fallon but I figured the first few episodes would be funnier. I'm sure he will settle in though, he's good. Real men watch Craig Ferguson though!

I don't know, I think Ferguson is the best at interviews (especially with women). I think what I like about Ferguson is that he doesn't care one bit about talking about their latest film/gig. As a matter of a fact, he always rips up the questions before the interview. He just puts them at ease, and gets them to just talk like they were talking off camera.

Here are some examples:

Alison Brie

Daniella Ruah

Olivia Munn

Kate Mara
