While I agree with your premise about season 5, I feel seasons 1-4 are strong enough to support the notion that it is the greatest piece of American media/literature this century

I don't know if it's the "best" from an artistic standpoint, but The Shield has the best replay value of those three shows to me, and the final two eps are on the short list of excellence.
