Just rewatched it recently and I never understood why this movie never gets mentioned as a good gangster movies.

1. Great, authentic settings of 80s latin gangster scene of New York.
2. Suspensful(chase scene, pool scene)
3. Awesome Dialogue.
Waiter in the club: Mr. Brigante, there's a problem. Mr. Kleinflelt is in the bathroom. He's fricking Stephanie.
Brigante(Al Pacino): So what's the problem? Good for him.

Benny Blanco: Maybe you don't remember me. My name is...
Brigante: Maybe I don't give a shite. Maybe I dont' remember the last time I blew my nose either.

4. Very good cast and side characters
-Pacino playing the gangster trying to be legit only to be pulled back in the game.
-Sean Penn is backstabbing, lying, money-hungry attorney who wants to play the gangster game.
-John Leguizmano, an up and coming ambitious dope dealer.
-Jose Guzman is the ambitious brown-nosing bodyguard.
-Viggo Mortensen - convicted crippled felon trying to screw his friend. You despise him and feel sorry for him at the same time.
-Saso(or Ron) - degenerate gambler/club owner who's too dumb and gutless for his own good.

that line was awesome. The pool hall scene at the beginning was great too.

Its way better than Scarface. Sean Penn's hair alone was Oscar worthy.

I was going to post this same thing. This is probably one of the most underrated and under appreciated gangster movies. It's so much better than Scarface its laughable.

Carlito's Way wipes it's arse with Scarface. In fact every movie wipes it's arse with Scarface.

I prefer Gayle.

This movie gets its proper due. It is second tier. Scarface is just terribly overrated. And it gets worse as it ages.

Donnie Brasco is better than Carlitos Way, but Carlitos is good.

Penn was so good in this movie. You really wanted to strangle him yourself.

He was a great weasel. He was also great with a similar character in The Falcon and the Snowman. Too me those are his best roles.

Pretty underrated and better than most...but not as good as Donnie Brasco.

They used to sell them together in one DVD as a double-feature for $10..
It was a steal... that's how underrated those movies were.

Scarface isn't overrated in my opinion. It's very entertaining.

But Carlito's Way is a more mature film and the characters have much more depth. Great movie.

This movie has made it hard for to remember the line, "They keep pulling me back in," came from the Godfather Part III.

Sean Penn

Agree with all the comments. Great performance. You really do want to kill the guy after punching him in the face for that ridiculous 'fro.

Carlito's Way is a good gangster movie, but if you want to see a underrated Sean Penn gangster movie watch State of Grace.

Cast includes Burgess Meredith, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, John Turturro, Robin Wright, & John C. Reilly.
