It was thought Avengers was going to crush everything this summer but Star Wars, and it looks like it's coming in 4th.

could it hitting a billion is unbeatable time. Like 2 weeks, easily.

You're saying two weeks is unbeatable?

JW is likely to pass a billion in its 11th day (12th at worst).

Good golly. I thought JW has been out for 3 weeks.

I just saw it yesterday and felt like I was SUPER late in catching it.

Well FF road the Walker train. JW is a much wider net than anything but Star Wars. Dinosaurs+Nostalgia+Interesting to EVERYONE. As good as AoU was, it's still more narrow than other franchises.

I'm going to predict that if Disney markets it correctly (and I have no reason to believe they won't)

I know this comment is two months old, but john Carter flopped largely in part because Disney just really fricked up the marketing for it.

Jurassic world was exceedingly average in my opinion. I guess it appeals to the mega-blockbuster crowd which apparently is almost everyone.

Star Wars will likely set record again, and that record may not fall until avatar 2 finally comes out.

Spectre might which seems on surface unlikely, but as others already pointed out, skyfall did it.

The fact that mconougheys space movie didnt break billion implies to me that 'the martian' will not either.

Id bet on star wars and spectre out of everything left

They could literally just put this on the screen for 30 seconds during random commercial breaks and make a billion.

Star Wars - December 18

4 Billionaires so far this year.
3 more to go.

I can't lie, I was shocked by the amount of success Jurassic World had. I knew it would make some money but had no idea it would do as well as it did.

I wonder just how much Star Wars will make. I anticipate that it will be way up there.

bumping to see where we are at right now.

1. Jurassic World $1,668,900,000
2. Furious 7 $1,514,800,000
3. Avengers: AoU $1,405,000,000
4. Minions $1,157,200,000

Close but no cigar

Inside Out $851,600,000
(could make it in home video)

Spectre $792,600,000
Still playing, but likely won't make it

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation $682,300,000

Not going to make it, but impressive none the less...

The Martian $573,400,000

Fifty Shades of Grey $570,500,000

This is one I thought could make it, but it fell short, still out though, but doubt it makes $1B

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 $523,800,000

We have Star Wars coming out this month too, and if it's not a top 3-5 all time it will be a failure.

So it looks like if you selected five to make $1b this year you are likely the winner, could possibly go six still.

Next year looks almost as good.

Another Star Wars, Batman v Superman, Civil War....

(all figures Box Office Mojo)

Heres a fun question: Had social media existed to the extent it does today, does Phantom Menace still do as well as it did?

Rough question. Would YouTube videos, Tosh.o, talk shows, and memes railing into Jar Jar Binks have set the franchise back? I don't know.

I do know I'm avoiding all Internet the couple days before the movie comes out and I've already bought my ticket to see it as early as possible (the 17th) so that the stupid Internet cannot ruin the movie for me.

any Star Wars movie will do well.
I'm more shocked that Iron Man 3 made so much and some of the worst movies of the last decade are so high in the top 100.

Awful movie. The other top three were not much better.

Well we have our 5th Billionaire this year, not that it's a surprise.
Most billion dollar films in one year ever.

Hunger Games has got to be extremely disappointing, although it did suck.
