re: How long did you lie to yourself about the Star Wars prequels?

I didn't like Episode 1 the moment I saw it, but I also didn't completely hate it. I think Episode 2 is one of the worst movies ever made, beyond redemption, but I'll defend a few things about Episode 1 which I think get too bad of a rap. Let me again stress that it's not a terribly good movie
ONE. The pod race scene is awesome. I know it serves no narrative purpose, but I'm just talking about the race itself. It's a fun scene with lots of tension. It's a damn race on speeders. I have no problem with that ten minute detour, aside from the announcers, who needed to be killed. Also, it had the benefit of very little Jake Lloyd dialogue.
TWO. Let the Jar Jar hate go. Seriously. He's not half as bad as the Ewoks. Star Wars always had hooks for the kids, and there's still a good movie that could exist with Jar Jar in it. He's not a deal breaker. Focusing on Jar Jar misses all of the truly horrible things about the movie.
THREE. Darth Maul and Qui Gonn is the best lightsaber fight in all six of the movies. It's awesome.
FOUR. The music. Still John Williams. He almost saved the movie.
FIVE. Ewan McGregor made a good Obi Wan. In fact, I'd argue he's the only actor to come out of the prequels with his dignity intact.
Pretty much everything else sucked. I won't even get into how they destroyed Yoda as a character, which felt like a personal violation.

I'll agree with that. I've said the same thing before that the Ewoks were just as bad, if not worse, than JJB.
I remember REALLY liking the first prequel, just wishing that they would've advanced Anakin in age a bit instead of keeping him at like 8 years old the whole movie.
One thing that I also really liked was the whole "There's always a bigger fish" scene when they were travelling through the planet underwater. I thought that was pretty cool.
And yeah, the last however many minutes with Darth Maul going at it against QGJ and Obiwan was bad fricking arse, no question. I remember flipping the frick out when he whipped out that double light saber.

The 3rd wasn't terrible, and imo the Maul fight scene at the end of the 1st was one of the best things out of the entire 6 movies.
The movies overall definitely didn't touch the originals, but it had it's few moments.

I remember a parody that hits on the shitty dialogue perfectly.
"I hate sand. It's gritty and course and gets everywhere.
But you....you are not like sand.
And that is why I love you."

quote:It's okay for pure entertainment value, but it's stupid in terms of the plot. They shouldn't have made him a kid.

And that brings up another point. If it was a "kids movie," like Lucas keeps saying, why was the basic plot so bland and over complicated, with the trade federation, etc.?

True. The music from Clones is probably my favorite of the entire series. Across the Stars deserved a better movie to be in.

I think it's fair to hate it just for the setup of that AWFUL line later.
"Now *this* is pod racing.

Until the ridiculous pod cast race announcers

Meh. Most actors are assholes. I'd probably be sick of talking about the prequels too, if I were him, especially seeing as how they're almost universally hated.

I liked 3 outside of Darth screaming nooooooo. Rest of the movie was really not bad.
But one and two, yeah.

The original came out when I was in junior high, so have always been a fan. But far from a fanboy. When the preqs came out, I went with some misgivings.
I can not remember a single plot point of the first preq, that's how little of an impression it made on me.

Phantom Menace is one of the worst movies ever made. I remember when it started, I was so excited to see Obi Wan and Qui-Gon ripping up droids with lightsabers and hearing all those old sounds. Then Jar-Jar showed up. This is the only one of the prequels I haven't been able to stomach watching again. I've seen Clones and Sith two or three times.
Attack of the Clones wasn't as bad. It was cool to see Yoda fight. But the acting in it was terrible and there was too much CGI crap.
Revenge of the Sith was kind of OK. I thought the final battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin lived up to expectations.

Episode I came out when I was 12, so I convinced myself I enjoyed it because I was a huge Star Wars fan.
Episode II was kind of the same thing. I really wanted to like it, so for a while I forced myself to believe I did.
I was pumped for Episode III specifically to see Anakin's "seduction" to the dark side. When I left the theater, I was furious. It was then I realized what utter pieces of garbage the whole lot were.
