How long before somebody spends $1 Billion to make a movie?

I've checked a few sources, and these numbers (as seen on Wikipedia) are repeated just about everywhere. We've gone as high as $378 million for one production (returning almost 3X the intitial investment). I imagine it won't be long before we are seeing "Superman v. Spiderman v. Batman v. Guardians of the Galaxy II: Coal Miner's Glove Cage Match" being made for 10 figures.

there will never be a time a studio approves a budget over $400M ...i would be surprised if those figures are based on the green lit budget. Seems more like the final price tag.

This just came out a month ago. You don't think it will be long before they spend over three times this much for one film? Which will require ticket prices to inflate drastically as well?
Not any time soon imo. If ever.

Why were those Pirates movies so expensive?

All dat gold in those treasure boxes.

Actually, I think it will happen in my lifetime (If I'm Lucky--SWIDT?--it will be within 25 years.

Holy shite where did that money go? I liked the movie but no way should it have cost 250 million to make it.

All the rest of the list was a guaranteed money making sequel except a John Carter (deemed a colossal failure) and Avatar. I could see Avengers blowing up a 400 million mark but the last one was nearly all CGI and still didn't come close.
What were the major costs to get Stranger Tides up so high? I would assume that they built entire ships on set to get the production costs up there but not sure where the rest would go. There is only so much shite you can buy to fit into a two hour movie.

I would imagine that Johnny Depp's salary is one factor. I'm sure he got a huge upfront salary (>$20 Million) plus a percentage of the gross. I'm sure the director and maybe a couple other actors got percentages as well, so maybe that is included in the cost of production? I don't know how that works. Or they had a really bitchin' espresso machine on set.

the Pirates movies are shot on mostly exterior locations around the world and require period dressing and gimbaled ships. Not to mention it's difficult to shoot in water. Your entire crew is the best of the best and are prepping for at least a year. Especially the Art Department where the Production designer will start at least a year out and generally has a rate of 15K a week. The art department alone on those movies total 350+ people..
And then you pile on A list money and tons of producers coupled with weather delays i would imagine.

Most big movies have a 20 million actor in them now, Depp could make 50 million on that movie and it wouldn't explain why it costs nearly 100 million more than other huge budget movies. I thought most budgets were released before all points are paid so I don't think those are included with budget costs, just the bottom line profits.

First, I read that the true cost of Avatar was $500M. So that is halfway there.
Second, "cost" for movies can have a lot of shite thrown in. I believe Tangled included years of pre-production cost that might have been starts and stops for other movies.
Finally, keep in mind what a movie has to earn for a studio to break-even. The theater keeps about 1/3 of the ticket price. Out of the rest, the studio might have to pay points to the director, big time actors, etc, which is usually based on the gross. Those points typically are not included in the cost. Robert Downey Jr got points for playing Iron Man and netted tens of millions of dollars for Avengers, I believe. So if a studio spends $1B on production and marketing (marketing costs are often excluded from the reported production budget), then the movie has to make $1.5B just to break-even, assuming there are no points going to anyone. I think we are a very long way from that, especially considering the money has to be spent up front, possibly years in advance of actually receiving the revenue. So don't hold your breath.
