how many of you out there do not use any kind of cable or satellite provider for entertainment? Currently I have netflix and xbmc with some addons particularly FreeCable and NaviX which work pretty well. Any other xbmc utilities I should look in to to improve the entertainment experience? Was thinking of getting a digital antenna for local channels, LSU games, etc. Anyone have advice for cutting the cable?

I got a roku for $50 and just hooked the cable direct to my TV and got 20-30 channels. A lot of those were Spanish but I got all locals and few others.

I recently got cable again b/c they offered it for like $5 more than what I paid for internet only.

I kept my cable internet the entire time though

I cut cable completely. I use Netflix and torrents. For sports, I just go to the duty hut and watch TV in there. They have cable. I also stream games on ESPN3.

When I get home, I'll most likely go with satellite instead of cable. I'm not going to sit in front of a laptop in my home.

We just started pirating more tbh.. But I also pay my fair share to amazon, ITunes and Netflix.

I cancelled it after football season. Haven't missed it at all really. I'll probably pick it back up again for football then drop it in December.

Been looking at Mohu Leaf

and

HD Homerun

Newest build of XBMC (frodo) has PVR capability. Your just have to establish the front and back ends in order to have it act as a DVR/PVR.

HD Homerun acts as a digital receiver for ATSC format broadcasts and can integrate w/ XBMC via NextPVR to provide a pretty seamless TV experience. It will provide you with a "now playing" and upcoming schedule of shows on the TV channels you get.

Mohu Leaf has been getting good reviews and will get you HD access to CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, etc. so there's no real reason to subscribe to a cable provider since those channels are free over the air.

Also, you might want to look into Super Repo ( LINK) as it has everything (or at least a lot of the relevant repos) pre-packaged. Makes it easier than looking for individual repos

just my insights. Would love to hear what others thoughts are.

I used XBMC for a while but I don't download a lot so I had little use for it. I stream almost everything and the apps they have for 1 channel and project free were pretty unreliable compared to going to the websites directly.

We really only watch tv in our bedroom where our pc is and I bought a long hdmi cable that we have connected to our desktop pc and we use it for everything. Between the sites I mentioned above and firstrow I get everything that I can't get through Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

As others have said, I don't miss having cable one bit. I still have internet through my cable provider and if I scan for channels on my tv with the same connection the internet is on I can get local channels and some spanish and home shopping channels like one above poster mentioned. I haven't used it all that much though. Honestly, I used to just mindlessly channel surf and I thought I would miss it but I don't.

you could try xbmc with navi x. basically you can stream anything. I don't download or pirate stuff for a number of reasons.

that's what I was gonna use the mohu leaf or HD homerun for as early cuyler stated. Primarily will use it to catch HD broadcasts of football season and would be worth the 30-80 dollar one time investment.

Get amazon prime and an xbox with hulu and netflix you honestly won't miss anything you want to see on cable except sports. My internet providers partnered with espn so I also get free espn 3 but if your team doesn't suck and you want to watch them I recommend a bar or getting an antenna.

I would love to do that but every site I check says I would have to get a huge roof mounted antenna to pick up anything. I'm about 50 miles from the nearest city that broadcasts all four networks. It sucks.
