Stop making comic book movies? Moron, two of the top 5 grossing films on the profit list were comic book movies and none of the biggest losers wete.

Do you even read or do you just try to shite on some of the only movies making huge bank?

Suicide Squad and X-Men were both a bit sub-par (and X-Men was downright bad) and yet they both made a ton of money. People can talk about super hero fatigue but numbers don't lie. My fellow nerds and fanboys will continue to flock to the theatres and throw down money to see these movies. I've been to every one that has came out this year and will see the rest of them.

Seems like it is getting to the point that movies are costing more to make than they can realistically recover at the box office. With the price of a movie outing for a family of five (normally $60-70 with popcorn and a drink or two) we maybe see two movies a year. It is much cheaper to buy the dvd/Blu-ray as a Christmas present for the kids.

I think this is the problem. I can spend like $20 to go to the theater (ticket plus a drink/snack) or I can wait about a month or two and just pick the movie up at RedBox for $1.50 and watch on my couch.

I'd rather spend the $1.50 because honestly there just hasn't even been any movies in theaters lately that I felt the need to rush and see. They've all looked kinda shitty. The only movies I've been excited to see recently was The Secret Life of Pets.

It is like the more money they spend, the shittier the movie is.

It's because they double down on losers. Instead of taking their losses, they dump a shite ton more money into advertising a crappy movie, and advertising has never made a movie better.

Some of the best movies I have seen in the past few years like The Way Way Back and The Drop couldn't have cost very much to make at all and were based on characters interacting with each other, not 'splosions and superpowers.

True. And I loved The Way Way Back, but that could be the greatest film of all time, score 100% on RT with critics and fans, have won academy awards and it would NEVER make as much money as a Pixar movie or a Marvel/DC films. It's not even conceivable.

I call bull shite.

There is no way Hollywood lost $1 billion this summer and not a single studio went out of business. They are lying. A lot of this is paper losses so they won't have to pay taxes.

Though I do think we should move away from so many huge event films and look at that Warner model of one or two tentpoles supported by lots of smaller, successful films. They made a lot of money on cheap horror films. There's something to be said for the modestly budgeted film.

It is... to a degree. There were an abnormally large amount of "Big" movie this year that shite the bed.

It really was not a great year for movies and the results showed it. Did we have some great movies?

God yes. We had an exceptional year in that regard. We also had a much worse then usual turn out of turd movies.

Back in the day you could count on two or three Meg Ryanesque romantic comedies with a budget a bit less then a Hollywood mansion to make money and cover the big disasters if they happened.

Now you either hit a home run or you strike out. Babe Ruth struck out a lot of times.

What if I told you that, in a relative sense, Babe Ruth didn't strike out all that often?

In the risk to reward, no, he didn't, but if you get a string of strikeouts then suddenly the swing for the fences philosophy starts to look bad.
