recognizable =/= popular
So explain.
Recognizable means I am aware of your existence.
Popular means I have a favorable opinion of you.
Popular really has two meanings. It can mean recognizable and likable. For instance, the Cowboys as the most popular NFL team. Why? Because their name, their brand is so recognizable. But they aren't popular in the sense that everyone likes them.
Savvy?

If the live action versions of these characters had never been photographed together, then the OP o's accurate in that this would be movie/pop culture history.
I have been out of the comic book game for a while, but when I was there last (1990s), DC's heroes were more recognizable and more popular than Marvel's. I did know all of the Marvel characters discussed here, but would have considered Supes, Batman and WW superior.
There is little question that currently, in 2014, and since the early 2000s, Marvel has overtaken DC in terms of general popularity because of the onscreen success, so this may well have translated to greater popularity in the comics.
However, DC's animated offerings (especially their serialized ones [Batman: The Animated Series ones to mind]) have been fare superior.

I love comic books and all things super heroes but this thread is embarrassing.

This is not true. At least from my grade school experience. Everyone read Marvel and Image. DC was not popular in the 90's save for the death of Superman, which was written because most DC books were stale back then. I was a big fan fo the Flash and GL runs during the 90's though.
Ok, I will concede that this might be

History
for someone over the age of 40ish. See again the idea that Wonder Woman is far from popular right now.

Are y'all still arguing about this?
I saw this thread last night and thought, "this looks right up my alley."
Then, before I could post, I realized, "this is dumb."
Y'all argue about some trivial stuff.

This thread makes me sad. I feel ashamed for posting in it.

It ebbs and flows. Its kind of like a see saw with one or the other enjoying surges of popularity.
Back in the early 70's when I started reading I became a Marvel fan and I think the main reason was those ole Marvel cartoons with the great theme songs. Though to be honest when I first started I did give several DC comics a try but they totally left me flat.
Now people who grew up with Superfriends probably gravitated to DC. People who grew up with the X-men cartoons probably went to Marvel.
There is such a synergy between the comics, the cartoons and the movies that I think the landscape of who's on top is always changing.
