This came on as I was sitting down after work today.
In the first 10 minutes of the flick Eastwood's character rapes a woman b/c she bumped into him, slapped his cigar, and insulted his whiskey breath.
She tries to shoot him the next day and fails. He wonders why it took her so long and the little weird guy thinks it's b/c CE didn't go back for more? WTF?
Exactly why am I supposed to root for this dude?

She bumped into him on purpose.
She is a whore.
She was upset he did not go back for more.

Since this is a spoiler thread I assume you saw the ending and the flashbacks. Clint is the ghost of the town's former sheriff back for revenge on the bandits who killed him and on the townspeople who stood around and did nothing to help. I agree he comes off as an arse to everyone but the runt but he has a good reason. I don't remember his exact relationship with the woman, there was some subplot about the bank stealing money or something like that and she was married to the bank president.
Anyway the whole movie is basically a revenge fantasy.

Wait til you see the scene where he is whipped to death

I don't think you need a spoiler alert for a 40 year old movie.

Well there was a thread a while back asking about Westerns so I didn't want to ruin anything for a person who hadn't seen it.
and, thanks for the explanation Brosef. I assumed he was killing for revenge (guessed he was a brother, not a ghost) but didn't see why he'd pin the blame on a woman in the town. It's not like she could have done shite to save him when he was getting whipped to death. That's some Old Testament style condemnation right there.

When the runt asks him his name at the end he says something like you know who I am and they showed the tombstone with his name. Then he just kind of fades away as he's riding out. I'm fairly certain he's a ghost but I guess its possible he's someone else.

Oh no I agree after you pointed it out. I guess I just wasn't paying enough attention at the end since I had to run off to post about it.

Yep. Man with no name. Comes back and kicks some arse in Pale Rider.
And I look, and behold a pale horse. And his name that sat upon him was death, and hell followed with him.
They were reading that passage in PR just as Clint rides up on a pale horse, and hell followed with him. If you haven't seen it, you need to.

Interesting.
I always assumed that he was the Marshall and that they hadn't killed him, just thought they did.
To think about it,I guess they did bury him.
A Ghost.My mind is blown.

Ghost/Avenging Angel
Always loved that movie (and Pale Rider was a good one as well - sure had skills with an ax handle)

I like the movie, but the protagonist committing forcible rape is a problem.
Root for the sheriff- the little guy

Rapes a woman and kills like 3 guys I believe.
I know all in the first 10 minutes! How many movies start out that badass?

It was the 60's.
i.e. She was asking for it.
Not my favorite CE western. I like my themes and symbolism a little more subtle.

He basically does this in Hang 'em High. My favorite Western.
