Also, as for making minorities "impossible to fire", that's not the case, but it does make it much more difficult and costly to do so

No it doesnt. This is some bullshite myth. There are no statistics backing this claim.
quote:

False, we had less than 90 years of the government mandating segregation at the point of a gun. You don't need laws to prevent people from doing things they don't already want to do.

Holy shite. You really need to go read a US history book. You have no clue what youre talking about if you think discrimination ends on its own. I only have all of human history on my side. Its laughable that you think the south just stops being racist and discriminatory on its own. The south didnt even want to let blacks vote, let alone live, shop,go to school, and pray with blacks. You have no clue what youre talking about. Youre just posting bullshite that isnt backed up by facts.

While obviously a huge improvement over anything prior, it arguably went too far when it banned discrimination by private businesses rather than just discrimination by government entities.

This is a good thing. Burger King shouldnt be allowed to not serve black people. Youre looking at the late 1960's like its today. Yes if today Burger King said they were no longer serving blacks they would be rediculed and lose a lot of profit. This wasnt the case back then. Southern businesses though it was just fine not allowing blacks to eat in a restaurant or stay in a hotel.

Just watched this. I am 62 and remember LBJ as president. I remember hearing that he had a very bad temper, a potty mouth, and played very dirty politics.

I just watched it and it was a good watch at least in a vacuum and it certainly nailed the very behavior and essence of LBJ, and the resistance of the democratic party regarding the CRA and republicans being accepting of it was accurate. The only flaw is that it takes the liberty of pretending that LBJ was fighting for the CRA out of the goodness of his heart and that couldn't be further from the truth. Sure he may have believed in it personally but he also saw a shite ton political value in it as democrats passing the CRA would lock down the black vote for the democrats forever and that's true today. LBJ opposed every civil rights measure that came up for a vote in congress until 1957 and that was because he only wanted to be POTUS and he needed credibility with the liberal wing of the party.

All in all, it's a good movie but it conveniently ignores LBJ's past and hidden motivations.

Easily the most evil President in US History.

Laughed gleefully as he allowed a war become politicized and unwinnable, and washed his body in the blood of 50,000 US soldiers.

Hate that sick frick

This.

He was JFK's biggest mistake and why his assignation was all the more tragic. There's a reason why JFK and RFK hated him and loved to shite all over him and make him as possibly irrelevant as he could be as VP keeping him in a black hole and doing the most random and obscure bullshite.

The Kennedy's may not have been perfect men but they knew what a monster LBJ was.

All the shite king bob said had nothing to do with the civil rights act. He is railing against affirmative action.

The civil rights act reinforced the 14th and 15th amendments. The voting rights act of 1965 made violating the 14th and 15th a case of Federal law. The 1964 and 1965 acts eliminated the states ability to discriminate against its own citizens. To do so is a Federal crime now

Great Society created the modern welfare state and spawned generations who would be trapped by dependency in poverty via use of entitlements.

Civil Rights Act destroyed the rights of business owners to refuse service and choose who to hire and fire. This spawned the massive growth of HR departments and helped fan the fires of the rising litigious society. While the act certainly id help to ease race relations in some respects, it has also had many unintended consequences which have completely eroded the rights of property owners and fanned the flames of racial animosity via Affirmative Action.

LBJ went full bore into the Vietnam War while attempting to fight it in a politically correct manner. 50,000 U.S. soldiers would go on to die...for nothing.

He literally signed into law modern america, warts and all. Whether one believes that that was good or bad, no one will deny that it was not important.

Agreed. LBJ is one of the top five worst Presidents ever. I wish I could go back in time to beg JFK to pick another southern democrat for VP so we could dodge the LBJ bullet.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions without a single clue of what really may happen although I really wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the case with LBJ.

But regarding the CRA, the only positive effect it has had was the public accommodations law regarding public and private commerce and even that still infringes on the rights of the property owner and that is still in essence righting a wrong with another wrong. It may have been necessary to do but it's still wrong.

LBJ wanted to end Vietnam in 1968, Nixon scuttled that with some dirty politics leading up to the election that ruined the Paris peace talks.

The Great Society was different legislation from the CRA and the VRA. It is wrong for states to legitimize discrimination against its citizens.

I am no LBJ fan but some sentiments expressed in this thread are simply misguided and patently wrong

They may not have hit on it as hard as it was in real life but LBJ did say something along the lines of the CRA being important to solidify him being re-elected. Even MLK said to the NAACP and other black leader guys about how he was probably just doing it for votes at their first meeting the movie showed.

I liked how the movie showed that LBJ was naturally more of a dixiecrat but he had to pander to the more liberal side of the party to win re-election.

I was also glad to see they included a scene of him on the crapper and telling his tailor that he needed room in his pants for his balls.

Overall what I'm getting at is that it was a very good movie and that no one should let their opinions on LBJ deter them from seeing the movie.

Screw that. My opinions count for something. LBJ and his legacy are what's wrong with American politics.

Watching it now. It's incredible so far.

Sometimes when you watch a movie you see the actor instead of the character. That's what I did for the first five minutes. Cranston dragged me into believing. One of the best performances I've seen in years.

You know they won't. They're going to make him out to be a hero. Hbo has some good tv but all of their political stuff is strictly left.

Yep. Before the civil rights act the south was referred to as the Solid South. In reference to the fact that the south always voted democrat.
