everything points to Jon being a politically savvy Ned Stark.

Does it? He doesn't seem that politically savvy so far, but kinda one dimensional. He didn't do so great at handling things with the Black Watch (ETA: the Night's Watch, sorry) and the opposition to the wildings. He motivates by strength of character but not really by manipulation or gamesmanship.

Who was around in Dany's life to tell her about her family?

Willem Darry. He was the one who smuggled Dany and Viserys from Dragonstone and got them to Braavos. He was master-at-arms for the Targs.

I didn't like how they had Jon basically frick everything up and go all cowboy instead of being a decent military leader. Then he was predictably saved by Littlefinger. Still loved the episode. I wish they could all be this worthy.

Agree. I keep hoping for tactical, cunning shrewd Jon Snow. But not complaining. Least he's alive.

I'm like 50 pages back btw.

It was odd to me to see Ramsay's men take almost a Hoplite formation. Until now all the Westerosi fighting styles have been based on Middle European swordsmaship with a little fencing. Maybe a couple of Japanese techniques but mostly fencing and regular swordsmanship.

It was odd to see that. Totally useless against artillery though and by the middle ages battle had trebuchets and ballistas.

IIRC early Roman battles of Legions vs Hoplites, Hoplites would usually win, and when they lost they inflicted severe casualties.

But Jon's not really a commander like everyone expects him to be. He's a fighter. And at that point in battle he just didn't care anymore.

You have to think the northern population is more than decimated.

This is what I don't get. It would be hard for me to be killing humans (regardless of my feelings towards them) knowing that an army of the dead was coming to kill us all. At this point, the damn White Walkers won't have to do anything other than show up to win this war. I liked the Dany battle scene in Mereen much better because of this. It makes much more sense to me.

Same here. Was like odd but cool. Seemed a little out of place but good.

The North has been kind of disappointing. "The North Remembers" my arse. That hype hasn't frickin paid off in the least. It feels like everyone who ever says that gets killed.

And the show really cemented that with random betrayal of the Starks by Smalljon.

so who gets the Bolton/umber/karstark castles and lands?
gotta give something good to badass mormount and to tormund I guess, assuming the wildlings that are left want to settle in

I imagine House Mormount will rule a much larger chunk of the north.

Also i woudl love Tormund to have a house, imagine a sigil of a man sticking it to a bear.
