Wow! Excellent story! Great book series to start while waiting for GRRM to release another book (which he may have to do as a ghost from the grave).

Before starting the book series, I had read that Sanderon's strength is his magic system, but I didn't know what they meant.

Now I understand and the magic system is AWESOME!

This.

If you enjoy Sanderson's style, check out Steelheart.

quote:

Steelheart is the story of a world full of superheroes who are called Epics. Or actually, supervillains. They took over the world with their powers and rule cities like Newcago, where ordinary people try to survive. One such supervillain is Steelheart, an Epic with invincible powers, who killed the father of an average teenager named David. But every Epic has his own weakness, and it's David's goal to find Steelheart's weakness and take revenge for the murder of his father. But in order to succeed he must join the Reckoners, a group of citizens that banded together to assassinate Epics. David has something valuable to offer; not a weapon but an experience. He has seen Steelheart bleed.

Great book. The first in a planned trilogy.

The magic in the Patrick Rothfuss books(The Name of the Wind) is excellent, too. Unfortunately, he'a a slow writer, as well. . .

I'll have to try this one out.

Killz, how would you compare it to Wheel of Time? Just wondering because I hated Wheel of Time and if Mistborn is in the same vein I'm going to stay away.

Much faster pace. Not sure if you finished Wheel of Time but it really got moving when Sanderson took over the series.

I haven't started Mistborn yet, but Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series is great. There are only two books so far, but they are each over 1000 pages.

I've been waiting for the final installment to the Kingkiller Chronicle for a while now. Excellent series so far.

I recently fell down the Sanderson rabbit hole. I started with the Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, jumped to Warbreaker, and am now on book 2 of the Mistborn series.

It was mind boggling to me that despite the various series being set on different worlds, those worlds are in the same universe and share some characters. Leading me to the ultimate question of what if someone wore Shardplate, had BioChromatic breath, and Allomancy...NERD HARD MAN, NERD HARD.

Sanderson is a beast.

I just fell upon Sanderson based on positive reviews on this board. I haven't read Wheel of Time yet. I was told to start with the Mistborn series.

So far it's great!

Don't forget to read the Alloy of Law, a short novella based 300 or so years after the Mistborn trilogy. It's absolutely fantastic. I like Mistborn, but you could definitely tell it was some of Sanderson's first works. The Stormlight Archives are, so far, some of my favorite fantasy novels.

And yes, if you haven't read the Kingkiller Chronicles, do so. Some truly excellent writing there.

I got stuck on the first book and put it down because it was boring. Then at the end when he went to that town, I finally got hooked.

Also bookmarked thread for future reading.

Thanks!

I was told exactly what you just posted, which is that you can tell the Mistborn series was some of his earliest writing. However, for someone being introduced to Sanderson, the Mistborn series would be the best way to quickly learn his magical system.

His highly descriptive magic system more than makes up for what the books lack.

Mistborn is a bit overrated on here. It is not a well written series IMO, and you can tell that Sanderson is starting to find his footing.

The magic system is EXCELLENT and well put together. Beyond that, I don't find it to be the best series, personally.

Sanderson has done great with Stormlight Chronicles.

I'll put on my To Read shelf. I just finished Gardens of the Moon last week and right now I'm on the back burner of some literary classics that I bought and never read. Once I'm done with those I'm going to finish the Malazan series before anything else. I'm really waiting on the Accursed Kings series to be completely translated then I'm hopping on those. Also reading some Lovecraft on the side.
