GOT observation

Has anyone noticed that when it comes to science and technology, the civilization in GOT has barely moved forward in thousands of years? Even our own dark ages only lasted a few hundred years. But the time from the fall of the western Roman empire to the Age of Reason only lasted a thousand years.

Well, the Valyrians were pretty advanced, but the world fell into a dark age after the Valyrians fell.

So let's say that Valyria is analogous to the Roman Empire. I just looked up the dates on AWOIAF. It's been about 400 years since the fall of Valyria. So that puts us right in the middle of the European dark ages. The timeline is probably not coincidentally all that different than the European timeline.

Based on Qyburns final words to Cersei before he left the dungeon, "the work continues" -- I have a strong feeling you'll get your advancement in Technology, The Mountain will return and the High Sparrow's shite will hit the fan.

I thought last week that it seems they would have developed gunpowder and musketball guns by now. I thought it was about time for guns.

Pretty much this.

I would think that a world run through forms of magic would have a difficult time realigning itself and developing technology quickly.

To be fair, in our Dark Ages you didn't have to deal with dragons and White Walkers.

Yeah but we had the Bubonic.

GRRM is a brilliant theif tbh. He uses times and stories and brings them together brilliantly.

Make your own fan fiction set in 1915 AL. You can create their version of WWI complete with Dragonfire flamethrowers and Valyrian bullets.

Well, but in the books, it seems like nothing has changed for thousands of years. I think the tv show shortened things

You say Bubonic, I say Grayscale.

No, Valyria isn't in the middle of a desert. Mereen is, but Valyria is across from the Gulf of Grief. Valyria is more a mix of Rome and Atlantis, while the cities of Slaver's Bay are based largely on Egypt.

agree with the op ... it's curious why they don't have mass produced books when they can build massive monuments and elaborate castles ...

I don't think so. Some of the events roughly mirror what I think is true history. I think the First Men were bronze age people. The Andals were either iron or steel age. These sorts of developments happened over the course of thousands of years in real history too.
