I think he wreaks havoc on Stannis' army. He may not kill Stannis, but I think his attack will be a major reason for Stannis' inability to take Winterfell.

What wildcat said, but I dont remember the 20 person thing. I thought he took the entire army with him. One of the things they the show changed was the size of the armies, they are much bigger in the books. The Boltons have a bunch of northern lords with them(they came for the wedding) along with a large portion of the Frey host.

after the season finale, will all the major events from the books have happened? will I be able to read through the maester threads and the crackpot thread without being blasted with a big occurrence from next season?
I don't care if some little storylines get spoiled as long as it isn't some big deal. I kind of look forward to the day I can read through those threads free of fear

There are 2 major plot lines that haven't occurred yet on the show, but have in the books. It's a safe bet one isn't going to come to fruition, but judging from a casting call the other will. Granted it seems to be a relatively minor story in the grand scheme of things, so if you don't mind just something minor being discussed (and it rarely is), you should be ok.
