It's implied in the books. HBO did it for shock value.

Yeah, I can see where it was implied. With the "Rainbow" guard and also when they brought up the past of him and his characteristics and that of his 2 older brothers, them being more "masculine" and "stern" if you will. But I thought there would be an actual thing between him and the Knight of Flowers in the actual book.

Was it also implied that Loras was this way too? The only thing I guess they could base it on was the whole flower thing, but besides that, I really don't see where they can throw a storyline like that on him.

I'm on book 3, and I felt the whole Renly Loras relationship was nowhere near what the show made it to be. Sure, we can assume he may have been gay in the books, but GRRM never explicitly stated it. To be honest not much, if anything, was stated about the Margaery being his beard deal.

The relationship is mainly connected via comments from various other characters in the books. In the second book when Stannis and Renly meet Renly talks about his new maiden bride, and Stannis makes a crack about "And in your bed she'll likely remain one". That's one of he first hints about Renly.

Later on in the books there is a comment from Jaime to Loras that makes the relationship between Renly and Loras quite obvious.

There are a few other things, but those are the two big ones.

I still think hbo took their liberties with the relationship though .

i'm about a quarter of the way through book 3 and haven't yet decided if i'm going to continue past where season 3 ended. can anyone tell me around where in a storm of swords does new shite that hasn't happened yet start? I know the chapters really don't follow a direct timeline when they jumped between characters but where would the stopping point be if I wanted to stop where season 3 did?

It's really hard to point to a specific spot where season 3 stopped. Bran's storyline from ASOS, for example, was covered in its entirety during this season. Other storylines stopped about 2/3 of the way through the book.

Just read the whole book. You wont be disappointed. It's seriously one of the best fantasy books ever written (and one of the most entertaining I've ever read).

my thing is I enjoy watching the show and being surprised at what happens. i'm sure I will still enjoy the show even if I know what's coming but it takes away the shock factor which I like.

alright non hodors I've just gotten to the mhysa mhysa mhysa moment in ASOS. my question still hasn't been answered to my satisfaction. if i don't want to see any spoilers from next season is this where i should stop? i still haven't gotten to the red wedding though which i'm guessing is Chapter 51 because that's catelyn's final chapter in the book. i'm on 43 now. i know there is more from the season that i haven't read yet but where is the 1st chapter that will tell me something that i may not want to be spoiled?

Read through the RW (Arya chapter) atleast. After that do whatever you want, but you should probably just finish the book rather than stop part way though just to wait another 8/9 months.

I've been over this. i haven't decided if i want to continue or stop yet. i enjoy not knowing what's going to happen next on the show reading past season 3 will take that experience away from me. haven't made up my mind yet though.

so there is no new info between ch. 43 and 51 (RW)?

Understandable. Up until the Arya chapter i menioned its all stuff you've seen in the show (slightly varied). Actually just skimmed through you can read up until Davos where he mentions reading a letter (chapter 54). After that its "new" stuff (Jon Snow).

ETA- one of the Jon snow chapters before the RW is new information but its around the time where they ended on the show with his story so it won't be anything ground breaking...I'd stop where it picks up after that Davos chapter though.

Did you regret your decision to continue reading or are you happy you did? Fear might find that opinion useful as he struggles with his own decision.
