Aside from a few points, the vast majority of the TV storylines have caught up or surpassed the books (at least until the next book comes out). Even the couple of storylines that didn't get caught up on the show aren't exactly pivotal (they certainly aren't Red Weddings).

If no book comes out by the time the next season starts, will there really be a need for the separate threads any longer?

There is no need now for two threads, but I'm sure there will continue to be because some want it that way.

The Hodors believe that anything that has happened in the books, including flashbacks, dreams or prophecies, that weren't shown on the series, to be spoilers.

There are MANY things that have happened in the books that were not in the show. Therefore, two separate threads.

No matter what, I will never be a poor illiterate Hodor.

Maesters are now hodors

Hodors are now Comotose Khal Drogos

We need a new lowest common denominator level

Does Stannis' TV story mesh with the books?

This. There are many things, such as backstory, etc that would probably be frowned upon by some. It would probably be cleaner for each thread if there was still a separation.

Plus there are some things that have been revealed in the books but not in the show with already introduced storylines

D&Ds? I mean, it sometimes feels like they haven't read the books either.

No. The last thing in the books about Stannis was he and his army were getting snowed-in en route to Winterfell.

The last thing about Dany was her riding out of the arena on dragonback.

Arya's storyline is farther along in the books as is Sam's. There are a few extra storylines going along in the books for characters that haven't been introduced (yet?) but nothing that comes to mind is truly spoilerific.

Did she meet up with the Dothraki at the end of the last book? It's been a while since I read it, but I don't remember that at all.

Yes her story ended with her seeing the Dothraki

I don't think she actually saw Dothraki in the book. She is passed out by a stream with blood running down her legs. It is just suggested that there may be Dothraki in the area. IIRC.

I'm still trying to figure out if the Dothraki will follow her, out if they will take he to the village where all former khalesis live.

I'm in book three now. I'm looking forward to finding out more differences.

I thought she saw Dothraki and it was one of Drogo's bloodriders? Or they were just Dothraki and they said they were going to bring her to Khal whatever (who was one of Drogo's bloodriders)

Hmm... I don't remember that. I'm going to see if I can look it up.

Dany is seen by the Dothraki scouts. Drogo lands and they are all like keyawww in reverence. It is implied that Dany is about to claim back Drogo's khalasar now lead by Jhoqo. IIRC
