I've enjoyed the season (except I found last week's episode pretty weak) and i think they can work this episode without the chain. But to say that the chain is "not an important plot device at all" I think is just wrong. It said a lot about Tyrion's usefulness and genius and was really established that he had a great part in the victory. Now, I don't have a problem if they establish those facts in some different way, But it definitely was an important plot device

It was cut. They attempted to film it but it proved to be harder than they expected so they scrapped it and used those resources elsewhere in this episode.
