Duvall could act circles around Hackman. I like Hackman, but Duvall is a far better actor.

That is a tough call because they are both great, but I'd lean towards Duvall because of Godfather.

with RD i suspend my disbelief more that its Robert Duvall
with Hackman...I tend to see Gene Hackman on screen more than his character

I find Duvall to be unspectacular. Like most of the vs. matchups, they both play very similar characters.

I'd pick Hackman. But I really don't like having to pick between the two. Lex Luthor, the coach from Hoosiers, Little Bill, etc.
If anything, Robert Duvall seems like more of the character actor. Honestly, besides The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, I really haven't seen any big time Duvall movies.
I think Hackman has also been in better movies in general. And that helps.

I like 'em both a lot. But The Godfather mojo is far too strong to overcome.

Duvall, and it's not even close in my book.
He has far more range. Some of his best portrayals have actually been in some lesser known movies.
