Marvel movies attract fans in their droves, but there’s one on-going criticism about the similarities of their heroes and villains that George RR Martin also agrees with.

The Game of Thrones creator, who is finishing off his next novel The Winds of Winter, took some time out of his hopefully busy schedule to write a blog post on his Live Journal about his views of Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man.

Martin was full of praise for the latest Marvel movie, but had some reservations about the villains.

“I am tired of this Marvel movie trope where the bad guy has the same powers as the hero. The Hulk fought the Abomination, who is just a bad Hulk. Spider-Man fights Venom, who is just a bad Spider-Man. Iron Man fights Ironmonger, a bad Iron Man,” he wrote.

“I want more films where the hero and the villain have wildly different powers. That makes the action more interesting.”

But Martin’s “quibble” should not be interpreted as major criticism of the movie.

The writer, who admits to once being a member of the “Merry Marvel Marching Society”, said he preferred Ant-Man to the recent Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While he wouldn’t go so far as to call it the best Marvel movie of all time, as some have done, he said: “There’s a lot of humour in this film, but it is not a farce, as I feared it might be….Ant-Man has a proper balance of story, character, humour and action, I think.”

“Overall, I had a swell time. For a few hours I was thirteen years old again,” he wrote.

He could have written some pages in the time his fat arse was sitting in that theater.

Even 6 or 8 would have been progress.

Plus the time he's spending bitching about movie villains.

ZOMBIES AND DRAGONS, MOTHERfrickER. CHOP, CHOP. WINTER IS COMING, YOU FAT frick. What if you die first?

The funny thing is, he's right. DC hasn't been any better, with the exception of Joker. I do think The Winter Soldier was bad arse, though. Even if he was a carbon copy of Captain America.

Who's up for a road trip? You know, to "help" him find his office, pen, writing pad, break his legs, slash his tires, sever his communication lines with the outside world - so he will finish the frickING BOOKS - I mean there's 2 left for frick's sake and he's going to movies/bitching about them??!!?

It's not like he writes these little informative pamphlets you can knock out in a weekend. It takes me months to read the frickers, a little bit at a time, so it's no wonder he takes years to write them- because he's only writing 15 minutes a day or so.

He's right. Besides Loki and Winter Soldier, MCU villains are nothing but an afterthought.

I enjoyed Ant-Man but, once again, the antagonist left a sour taste in my mouth. They got a good actor to play the villain but gave him very little to work with. Not once in the film did I feel worried for the main characters when he was on-screen.

Hopefully they let Brolin do his thing with the character.

I don't get into Marvel movies all that much but Fisk in Marvel's "Daredevil" series was freaking awesome, maybe the best and most complex antagonist I've seen in years.

I wasn't a huge fan of that depiction of Kingpin, but I do agree that the character was complex and very inventive as a villain (he just wasn't very Kingpinish). It's too bad we only see that in a TV show.

I wouldn't say afterthought, but "safe" is probably the best word. Marvel doesn't make the offensive to taste, the comic books, or to heroes. They put them in place to keep stories moving along and nothing else. It does suck, but since they usually get good actors to play them, there's always that.

He does focus on specifics like Iron Monger, while not a great villain, Stane actually was. The way he pushed Tony aside, kept control, etc. And Bridges' performance certainly helped.

The Red Skull just didn't get enough screen time, and wasn't really able to show his true villainous self. But that just goes to abbreviated run times.

For Martin, this trend won't really change much. Magic is going to be all over Strange. Civil War won't bring anyone new to the table on the Villain side but Zemo (which can be fantastic, we'll see) who is just another spy/soldier type.

I do think Marvel was planning to get everyone comfortable with the idea of super heroes and the universe, before getting creative. Captain Marvel has a good rogue's gallery from space, the Inhumans require new creativity in both heroes and villains, and Dr. Strange MIGHT go some different places if it gets sequels.

Also, we should probably see some cool stuff in Thor: Ragnorak and GotG2 methinks.

Goddamn it. I thought this was a writer for the TV show, not George RR Martin.

I've got some criticism for him: STOP DOING shite LIKE THIS AND FINISH THE BOOKS.
