Sand Snakes will be a non-factor once Doran locks their crazy asses up. They sucked in the book too.
The funny thing about ASOIAF, it's applauded for all the strong heroic female characters, but almost all of them are really really stupid.
There is no female version of Littlefinger/Tywin/Tyrion/Varys/Illyrio. The only one that comes close is the queen of thorns and she's a minor player.

The whip thing was cheesy and killing the poor boat captain was kind of a dick move.
I never thought Elaria was very hot, but she's much less so with shorter hair. Nym was the only cute one, but she had that boyish haircut that the lesbians love so much.
I always hated the Dorne chapters anyway.

I really think the main function of the sand snakes is to frame Doran's storyline - what he is planning and the obsticles he faces in the form of impatience from both relatives and the public.
And for show purposes, to give Jamie & Bronn something to do.
