It was a huge deal when it aired, but The Day After (1983) has since gone to the dustbin. Maybe since it was a made for tv movie, or just that its appeal was spent when the Cold War “ended”.
Full of big names at the time; Robards, Lithgow, Guttenberg and powermilf JoBeth Williams.
As fun & carefree as the 80’s were, there was always the spectre of fiery holocaust being one bad move away.
Anyway, for anyone that wants to feel some nostaligia, the whole film is on YOUTUBE

Ain't that the truth.
With a 46 rating and a 62% share of the viewing audience during its initial broadcast, it set a record as the highest-rated television film in history—a record it still held as recently as a 2009 report.
Now nobody barely knows anything about it.
But The Day After was bigger than Shogun and V and Lonesome Dove.
It was an event people talked about at school.

Here’s one that hardly anyone remembers: Looker (1981)
Yep. Screenplay/story by Michael Crichton; probably why it was so cool.

When Reagan called the USSR the Evil Empire...I remember things getting a little too real.
1983-1984 we had class drills to crawl under our desks in case of a nuclear attack.
Look at the movies that came out between 1982-1984.
War Games
Red Dawn
The Day After

Great to see Quest for Fire mentioned. There should be move caveman movies.
And movies about cults. Ticket to Heaven is a good one from 1981.

Great movie. At the end of the decade, there was "Day One," an excellent AT&T TV movie about "The Making Of The Atomic Bomb," the latter being the name of Richard Rhodes' great book on the subject. It's a thick history book that's better than most novels, but if you ain't got time for dat, "Day One" is a good substitute. Better in some ways is the BBC mini-series "Oppenheimer," which I think came out in 1980. There was also 1984's "Threads," sort of Britain's "The Day After." The 80's was the decade for good nuclear bomb movies. (Note that I did not mention "Fat Man And Little Boy" or "The Manhattan Project." That was on purpose.)

Two films that had stellar casts that were (at the time) fairly unknown.
