Don't forget that he didn't lose Leutenant Dan, who eventually became his business partner and best friend. And his son is the fulfillment of all of his dreams.

Forest understands that he has been blessed in life. The moment he is overcome with emotion at the sight of his son and nervously asks Jenny if little Forest is smart to which she replies that little Forest is the smartest kid in his class - that moment, to Forest, replaces all of the heartache that he's experienced.

Little Forest is the culmination of his life. Nothing from before matters anymore. His true love is not Jenny, but rather his son, and he will do everything possible to give his son the best life imaginable.

Forest most definitely lived a good life.

I loathe the underlying message of the move: that human intelligence is a curse

Say what?

The author punishes more human and self aware people in the movie with terrible things while forrest blunders through life with near absolute (and absolutely miraculous) success. If only those people could have been dumber perhaps they would have been spared such awful outcomes.

His life definitely didn't suck in his own eyes, and that's all that matters, not by whether or not someone else could be happy with his circumstances.

There's a saying that says 10% of life is what happens to you, 90% of life is how you react to it.

He probably has HIV/ hepatitis C, and 5-10 std's from banging Jenny.

Wasn't their sex when she took him back to her dorm room at the all girls school? Seems like that was before the whoring and drugs and AIDS. Forrest and Jr were probably fine.

Forrest had a great life. He's perfectly content to be back home, mowing lawns and being with Forrest Jr. And he doesn't have to worry about money. Yeah, bad things happened to him (Jenny dying, his mom dying, Bubba dying), but a lot of good things happened to him too. And he's the sort to appreciate the good things in life and not worry about the bad things.

not sure how this is even a debate.

it doesn't matter what he had wrong with him, he experienced more than most ever will.

I don't watch it that frequently, but watching it last night I realized that it is most likely my favorite movie.

As long as you're generally happy you have a good life.
