re: Forest Gump Debate: Did Forest Gump Have a Good Life?

It was obvious that Forrest saw that he had a good life, and that's all that matters.
There are people who will never fulfill their dreams or make a ton of money, but I'm sure they will look back on their lives and see that it was good for one reason or another.

Good thing he had a mental handicap, or he would've had some major PTSD after what he went through in Vietnam

Tidbit from the little scrollers they put at the bottom of the movie (on AMC I think):
SPOILER FOR BOOK (even though I never even knew there was a book before I saw that scroller)

On the little caption at the bottom of the screen they said at the end of the book ...
... Jennie married another guy and Forrest ended up living on the street.

All I know is this:
I will still come close to crying... When his momma dies.
Jenny is a whore who used him.... But, let's all feel sorry for her because she got abused.

In the book, Forrest is real negative ahole. And ends up playing for the Saints

Half a tard with scoliosis gets beat up throughout entire childhood, mom whores out to principal, relegated to permanent friend zone, pisses himself at whitehouse on national TV, gets shipped off to Nam, best friend dies, other best friend is an amputee who yells at him, forgets how to play ping pong in world competition, his first kiss tasted like cigarrettes, has his million dollar "jave a nice day" idea pirated, his mom dies, he gets cuckolded, he marries whore with AIDS, and he has to perpetually wonder if his kids a tard too because he's too stupid to figure it out for himself.

He was happy. That's all that matters.

My buddy sees Forest Gump's life as miserable. The way he sees it, Forest Gump's intelligence is a terrible affliction. His best friend and wife die well before their time and he loses his mother in before he is ready. He has no hopes and dreams that he can fulfill and strive for. A used car analogy was used.
Your buddy is wrong. If anything, being stupid makes you happier and more easily satisfied. It's a theory I've had for a while that if you give a smart person and a dumb person the same quality of life, I can just about guarantee the smart one is less satisfied with it. Sure Forest didn't like being called dumb, but Forest had a much happier life than any of the other main characters. They understood how screwed they were in life, while Forest really didn't.
While I think he was heavily exploited by the love of his life, he lived a good and happy life, and will love raising this bastard child he thinks is his own.

I think he's happy at the end. Everyone experiences loss and disappointment so that can't be the sole measure of life.

Forrest is not miserable. He lacks the ability to appreciate most of the things that I would value as a human being but he does have an appreciation for his friends and family.
I don't think your friend is entirely wrong because I loathe the underlying message of the move: that human intelligence is a curse... but arguing that Forrest was miserable is just not an opinion that I think you can defend because the movie shows him enjoying life.

Jenny Curran: Were you scared in Vietnam?
Forrest Gump: Yes. Well, I-I don't know. Sometimes it would stop raining long enough for the stars to come out... and then it was nice. It was like just before the sun goes to bed down on the bayou. There was always a million sparkles on the water... like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny, it looked like there were two skies one on top of the other. And then in the desert, when the sun comes up, I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the earth began. It's so beautiful.
Jenny Curran: I wish I could've been there with you.
Forrest Gump: You were.
This scene in the movie basically tells us that he appreciates the epicness of his life.

The book is so much different from the movie. He's more of a big dumb oaf than the lovable oblivious movie version.

Most people would say he led the greatest life ever and played for god!!!
I would see it like a burden to have to be a Bama fan!
