It is about child soldiers in Africa. It has Idris Elba.

It looks pretty good.

Wiki Synopsis:
quote:

In an unnamed West African country, when civil war tears his family apart and militants kill his father, a young boy named Agu (Abraham Attah) is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters led by the ferocious Commandant (Idris Elba), who takes him in as a child soldier.

Saw that on Instant Watcher today. Looks like a film you have to prepare yourself to watch. Going to add it to my list and watch it after a football weekend.

Agreed.

Critics are liking it. It is sitting at 89% of RT right now.

are the mercenaries fighting for or against Idris Elba's opportunity to be Bond?

Kinda off topic but what's the obsession with child soldiers in Hollywood. It's obviously an important issue but I've done a fair amount of research into modern affairs in Africa, there are plenty of other fricked up things to explore.

Hell, I was reading last week about the Ethiopian famine. It'd make a great movie about the journalists and activists who risked their lives to expose the famine to the world.

In reality, the dictator knew the famine was coming because his agriculture chief told him to begin to prepare for it. he refused saying something along the lines of "obviously God has found them not worth saving" and preceded to spend 200 million dollars for the anniversary of his inauguration.

Then, when the international community got involved, the dictator took every healthy adult and evacuated them and left the children and elderly to starve.

Graphic and absolutely sickening:

I just came through my pants and into my own mouth.

Good thing this is a Netflick, because I'll be jacking off the entire time.

I think it's similar to the disturbing nature of child zombies in zombie flicks. The idea of an "innocent" child being turned into a killer strikes a chord with people.

Elba is way too urban for this kind of role.

Social message movies are not my favorites. I like to be entertained, not preached to.

Watched it last night and it was excellent. Beautifully shot and the story was both compelling and sad. The movie also didn't pull any punches and showed the horrors of being a child soldier and the brutality of Africa.

Idris Elba will be nominated for an Oscar and rightfully so. He was fantastic in his role.

For me, one watch was enough. This movie is kind of like 12 Years a Slave. Just a heavy watch that doesn't make for an enjoyable repeat view.

Basically Netflix knocked it out the park and I look forward to more of their original movies to go with their stellar lineup of shows.

Just finished it. Fukunaga constructed a very nice film.

Not one of my favorites of the year, mainly because no matter how hard I try I don't give a shite about the subject matter of the film, but a fine piece of film making and definitely worth a watch. Elba was also very good.
