I saw it three times in theaters and I always remember it being "fly you fools". It has been awhile, though.

That's why they didn't ask the eagles to fly the ring to Mount Doom. Tolkien was writing a mythology about the creation of the world. It was about how the supernatural guided men into assuming control.

I always thought that the eagles would have been detected by Sauron and he would have placed a heavy guard in and around the mountain to prevent the ring getting to the fires/lava. You'd think he would have some people/arcs/other creatures on standby around there. I don't think the eagles could have gotten into that cave so they would have had to drop someone to do the last part anyway.
Of course if Sauron was smart he would have definitely either placed an extremely heavy guard around any entry ways to the fire/lava and/or put some heavy walls or doorways in the way. That way Frodo would have had a lot harder time than just walking in.

The eagles... in both the Hobit and LotR.. are a well-known example of Deux Ex Machina. And hence, it created the question, "well, why didn't they just do that in the first place?" like so many other examples.
This was well put together, though. The "fly, you fools!" line really brings it together.

The eagles are also higher order beings, that don't take orders from anyone. If I remember correctly from the books the Nazgul have the flying mounts after the fight at the river ford of Rivendell.

You can say that about any species from LotR really. No one was ordered to destroy the ring. It was just something that had to be done and I can see the eagles wanting to do what they could since there livelihood partially depended on a non-scorched middle earth.

He says "Run you fools" in the movie. Maybe they changed it when it went to dvd, but in the theater he says, "Run". Here is a link to the battle. At 2:25 he says the line (LINK ). It's kind of shitty that people are twisting this around...

Anyone who read the Hobbit should know the answer to this riddle.

In it they flew them out of danger and then dropped them at a certain point because they wouldn't go any further because they feared getting shot at by the arrows of men. They were getting shot at because they would often steal and eat their sheep. The eagles aren't supposed to be omnipotent creatures. Even regular arrows can hurt them, you think they wouldn't be confronted in Mordor?

Why would they flow low enough to be hit by arrows going into mordor? They would fly high, out of sight, then drop down at the mouth of mt. doom. It's not like there were guards there (that we know of).

Because once they got low enough to be spotted in Mordor I'd assume the whole party would be confronted by Nazgul and Orcs alike. No way they could just sneak in there without being seen.
Same reason why they wouldn't drop them off at the Lonely Mountain, presumably they want nothing to do with Smaug.
Plus let's assume they're like actual eagles, they have a limit to how high they can go.
