The man could flip out better than anyone in film history. The only guy who is a funnier angry yeller is Bob Oedenkirk, who I think borrows heavily from Wilder.

That letter that's being posted online today is amazing. He really put thought into these roles in a way I'm not sure many actors, particularly comedians, do.
I do think Wonka was kind-hearted, but he's also dangerous because kids are dangerous. So is play. He's almost all id, and he is having a grand old time messing with his new playmates, but he views them as playthings, not as people. The end reveals he didn't want to hurt them, but he's not overly concerned with their safety either.
I mean, the idea that he'd put Charlie through a gauntlet of tests is fairly insane in the first place. It makes sense in Wonka's brain, and his final gift gives all of the suffering meaning, but he's still a child trapped in an adult's body, wielding massive power over five little kids and their parents.
I love Willy Wonka precisely because there is an element of menace. And like you point out, you never know if he's lying.

Fair enough. I don't necessarily disagree with that. And, as far as we know, all the kids died (and Mr. Salt). He may have told Charlie what Charlie wanted to hear. I mean, he made them sign releases for a reason.

His run ion the 70's was filled with great characters
I always had a special place in my heart for "We bad" from Stir Crazy. That scene would make my mother laugh no matter what and when she laughed, everyone laughed.

Wonderfully written and acted by Wilder. The set-up is funnier than the impending punchline. You know exactly what is going to happen and you're laughing in preparation.

One of the many many many things I hated about the remake was at the end, seeing the kids off in the distance so you know they were all alive.

I'll list his best moment from each of my favorite movies he's in.
The entire bookcase candle scene from Young Frankenstein.
The part in Stir Crazy when him and Pryor are about to be put in their cell and he looses it. "Harry, he thinks he's a horse!"
Blazing Saddles, the part where he says "Yea, but I shoot with this hand."
