Favorite- Seven Samurai
Least favorite- Matrix

Yeah its bizarre that all 3 LOTR's are on the list... I don't think anyone could have done a better job than what Jackson did with Fellowship of the Ring... the rest of the series which I enjoyed just missed the mark for me but that is more to do with the world and content getting to big for a more effective adaptation to screen.

Didn't realize that I've seen every film in the top 20 until now.

Favorite: seven samurai. I'm pretty sure that this used to be solidly in the top 10. Why the big drop, I dunno.

Least favorite: the dark knight.

Of the ones I've seen, these would be my choices. There are some real head scratchers on this list.

Least Favorite-Shawshank, the most overrated movie in history and on this board.

Yeah, I just don't get it. It's certainly well made and a high quality film but he out-pouring of love confuses the heck out of me. I mean it's good, but certainly not great.

And I think that's the issue. Is Shawshank the very best "good enough" film of all time? It's so mediocre that you can never say anything bad about it? It takes so few chances that everyone just "likes it enough" to never dislike it?

I don't know how else to say it. To find flaws you have to get picky, but I also can't point out anything really amazing about it.

It takes no chances, offends no one, and is a story about redemption. What better mix for audience enthusiasm?

Such a weird film.

I love shawshank, but I definitely understand what you are saying. I feel like la confidential and gladiator are similar.

Shawshank is such a wonderful and deserving movie.A very captivating movie upon first watch and a movie you can rewatch a number of times.

I absolutely think it's worthy of its consistently high ranking.

Forrest Gump may move up on the "Least" side due to rewatchability. Hadn't seen it in years until recently and couldn't help but think while I was watching it how gimmicky it was.

Haven't seen - Schindlers List

This post reminded me of when Ford presented Schindler's List unedited on NBC. Then I realized that the reason they did it was to distance themselves from Henry Ford's antisemitism.

ETA: Hard for me to choose a favorite, but the Lord of the Rings movies don't deserve to be in the top 20 films of all time.

Hate - LotR - Return of the King. Movie was changed so much from the story in the book especially the ending that I got up and walked out of the movie theater before the movie was over.

I walked out too, didn't read the book but I left cause the movie sucked and I had things to do.

Not sure how inception made this list. Decent movie, but I wouldn't cram it between the two best Star Wars movies and two of the three LOTR movies

Another issue here is how are only two Star Wars movies on here? Should at least have the entire original trilogy. And all should be ranked higher

You like a low budget and incredibly cheesy Samurai movie from 1954 over Shawshank?

I haven't seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, seven samarai, or godfather 2.

Seen about 30 minutes of both Godfather and Goodfellas. Hated both. Favorite would be Pulp Fiction or Shawshank.

Wow, top 20 for these two

You do realize that these rankings are based on how many stars people give them when they rate them on the website, right? In other words, it's average Joe and Sally voting on these, not A.O. Scott.
