Deep Web is a 2015 documentary film directed by Alex Winter, chronicling events surrounding Silk Road, Bitcoin and politics of the Dark Web.

Covering the trial of Ross Ulbricht, the documentary features interviews with Wired writer Andy Greenberg. Winter is best known on screen for playing Bill from the Bill & Ted film series; Deep Web features narration from his former co-star and Bitcoin enthusiast Keanu Reeves.[1] The film premiered at the 2015 South By Southwest film festival,[2] and aired on May 31, 2015, on the Epix network.[3]

Watched this last night. Anyone else watched this yet? Trailer

I can remember reading some of the articles about The Silk Road. But seeing another view of this entire situation has got be thinking.

I heard Winter on a podcast recently discussing this film. I was impressed by his articulateness and knowledge of the topic.

It's another way to have a larger conversation. Much like the documentary "CITIZENFOUR" did.

What podcast was this on?

Have you read the in-depth "article" (basically a mini-book) on Wired discussing the rise and fall of Silk Road? It was one of the best materials I have read in this space.

I'll check it out.

This was a fascinating documentary. Unfortunately, I believe the majority of our society was gloss over it and think that this young man deserves the punishment he is currently receiving. Personally, I believe he was made an example of by our justice system.

At first I agreed with you. Reading more of the details, Ross deserves to go to jail for a while. Life imprisonment is a bit harsh, but he executed multiple murders-for hire. Fortunately, it was to an undercover agent.

To this day no proof of this has been released. You do realize that he wasn't the soul founder of TSR. That's one of the many issues of working with folks on the internet that are anonymous. You don't really know who you are dealing with and you don't know who could/would flip on you if the situation got too heated.

Once again, the media decided to spin this story before people actually got the facts and were able to look at it with a detailed eye [Similar to how they lashed out at Edward Snowden in the beginning].

I bet you didn't know that two agents involved in this case decided to take funds from TSR and put them into their personal accounts. Which they were never charged for. LINK

Yes, I did know. And from your own link, Force and Bridges were charged with wire fraud and money laundering.

I read that article and you're right about the length. But it was interesting throughout. I do think it was longer than some books I have read though and if you really wanted to go down the rabbit hole, there were about 4-5 links to related articles on each page it seemed like. You could have spent a month reading all of the articles.

What I was trying to say is that no mention of this happen during the court case. I understand that under our system. What he did was illegal and that he should probably serve some time. But Gov't agency stretched the truth to capture and convict this guy imo. Especially when it's fairly obvious that he was not the sole creator of TSR.

Furthermore, much like the actual War on Drugs. When the gov't takes out massive operations like this. hundreds of smaller forums pop up and start organizing.

He may not have been the sole creator of TSR, but from what I have read, there seemed to be ample evidence that he was running the show, especially when they had Ulbricht under physical surveillance and his movements matched exactly with the Dead Pirate Roberts actions.

I'd like to see this. Is EPIX a network on cable?

He deserved hard time, but life no parole is quite extreme.

I think the judge was sending a big deterrence message to the dark net; it took a ton of resources to get this guy.

Wired had a good write up on this.LINK /

And their piece on the local guy who they arrested for allegedly counterfeiting coupons. LINK /

Yes, EPIX offers 4 very good movie channels, but I have to pay extra for them on Uverse.

ETA: the movie is playing at this very moment on channel 1892.
