Am I the only one that was pissed that the Empire destroyed such a beautiful planet? Also, why did they physically destroy their own data center? That just seems like a really stupid way of handling it being compromised.

The Death Star was complete. Nothing mattered at that point but protecting it, which means protecting it's secrets. Its the world ender and will give them power over the entire galaxy.

First off, it's not giant. Secondly it was put there by a deep cover rebel. That is actually the premise of this whole damn movie.
