I'm not sure who people wanted. They weren't going to give that role to some up and comer or someone without a following. Emma Watson was a big enough name to carry the lead and I thought she was really good. People just need something to bitch about and critique in the internet age. Everyone's a critic.

Probably but being able to put "Emma Watson as Belle" in the credits did nothing but help Disney.

I wouldn't go as far as calling her the biggest flaw in the movie, but yeah, she was fairly underwhelming.
She wasn't Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight, but she was either meh or arguably the weak link in more scenes than not.
As we were walking out of the movie, even my wife, who knows nothing about Emma Watson, said "they could've gotten someone better for Belle."
