Donnie Darko was ahead of its time.

It was good 20 years ago, it’s good now. Watched it last night after the Tigers’ tough loss at Arkansas.
Using the 80s setting to make fun of school and youth culture, touching on national politics and its influence, end time prophecy, bullying, pedophilia, school politics, prescription abuse, shady government characters, sex, grooming etc etc.
The style of this movie is entertaining with the use of music and pop culture, as well as keeping it simple with almost an indie vibe.
Drew Barrymore was close to her peak hotness. Jake Jill-in-hall, as always, on point.
Still after all these years, I still can’t quite grasp the interdimensional existence with Donnie and Frank.

Always liked how it’s got a bunch of 80s stars and Donnie has some sort of superhero name. Great movie.

The scene in the movie theatre when Frank reveals the portal and tells him to burn the house to the ground was really well done, pretty trippy.

The one thing I’ll give her is she definitely reminded me of some female English teachers I had in high school and college.

I have watched this movie probably a 100 times and I still don't know if it about time travel or insanity

Pretty sure that is the one I watched last night. The run time was about 2 hours and 13 minutes.

I think it was perfect for its time. That aesthetic was confined to a pretty narrow time frame.

As far as the camera work and how they shot it?
I was reading up on the director, who was very green, but got lauded for his laid back approach on set and his ability to get along and let the actors act.
Add: the two actors playing his parents were completely likable to me. I’ve always enjoyed Mary McDonnell, but the dad was the one that got me. He acted pretty much how I would if Donnie were my son… don’t let him think he’s crazy in a bad way, just know that most everyone that looks at you crazy is full of shite themselves.

20 years ago we watched it drunk and I thought I had it figured it out, watched it again sober and had no idea what this movie was about.

I think that movie is a good sign of your intelligence, the dumbest person I know hates it. It's too complex for some people. I love trying to figure that movie out.

My biggest problem about the movie is that to truly “get it” you have to read excerpts of the fictional book mentioned in the film or read explanations provided by others who did. There is no way to get 100% there by what’s in the film, no matter how smart or attentive you are. On the right track, sure, but no more.

This is correct. The director's cut does a good job incorporating this. I did not really get it until that was overlayed onto the movie.
