I'm liking the new doctor

To be honest this was the first Dr. Who episode I've watched in its entirety. The show just seemed cheesy when I'd come across it and I changed channels quickly. I watched this one because of Capaldi who I loved in In the Loop. This episode exceeded my expectations by a long shot. And I will likely go back and watch some more recent stuff. It was in the early 80's when I decided I didn't care for the series and in retrospect that may have been a mistake.

Loving the new doctor.

SPOILERS SWEETIE:

I like the darkness. Screw the Nuwho fan girls. He's a goddamn timelord. He saw the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Never-Weres.

Also, he's Scottish and likes a good belt of whiskey

You can be dark and a dick and still likeable. Capaldi didn't really have that "IT" moment for me, but I'm not writing him off.

I liked it. It started kind of rough, but by the end it got pretty good.

I loved the cameo by Smith.

Question. How would you guys rank the introductory episodes of all the new Doctors?

I have it as

1) "Eleventh Hour"
2) "Rose"
3) "Deep Breath"
4) "Christmas Invasion"

I have "Eleventh Hour" and "Rose" pretty close because they are both great. "Eleventh Hour" eeks it out for me though because I went into it with such low expectations and it completely blew me away.

"Deep Breath" wasn't anything special compared to other Doctor who episodes, but it was okay. "Christmas Invasion" almost made me quit watching. Thankfully i still watched "New Earth" and had my faith restored.

I liked the episode. It usually takes a while for the new Doctor to shake out so even though Capaldi didn't knock my socks off, I'm willing to give him the time.

SPOLIERS...SORT OF.

And I do like, and hope they continue, down the path of showing the Doctor as the close to godlike alien that he is; in other words, we're not really supposed to "relate" to him like with Matt Smith, which made the end a nice touch. Four and Six did good work with that but this one is even older, darker and potentially more jaded.

His previous self wants Clara to stay by him to help the new persona keep a hold of some of that empathy for humanity and lesser beings.

Your list is good, but I put Rose at the top. For someone who was never into Who, it completely drew me in.

The episode tonight was okay, but I will say I got emotional on the 11th phone call.

He foreshadowed that tonight with his speech to Clara right before he hit Glasgow.

I loved the whole I'm not your boyfriend and I have business to take care of angle.

I won't argue with that. Like I said it was a pretty close decision for me.

Eccleston really hit his stride towards the end of season one and i can't help but wonder what could have been had he stayed. That would probably mean no Tennant though so i guess it was for the best.

It actually caused me to stop watching the show completely for a month or so. I had to make myself to back to it.

I liked Capaldi in this ep more than I liked Smith in Eleventh Hour.

My New-Who opener rankings:

Rose
Deep Breath
Eleventh Hour
Christmas Invasion

This ep was also the best that Clara's ever been, and I like Clara.

Most quotable ep in years.

Strax and co are back to being good and not a drain on an episode.

I loved the cameo, but found it unnecessary.

Some reviews are attacking the ep for Capaldi being too Matt Smith-y ("he wears a tie," "Geronimo," etc.). FFS, Tennant in Christmas Invasion did a bunch of Ecclestone things.

yea that was an absolutely horrible scene, and the episode was pretty weak, the stupid look on their face when the "water infection" kicks in, and so forth the only good part was the end when the adelaide officer bitch kills herself to rebuff the doctor.

Over all Waters was a pretty weak stand alone episode.

Dalek Asylum
The Doctors Wife

both much better for stand alone, the arc stories from The Silence(falls) and Pandorica both kicked arse for better story's/episodes.

Donna was easily the most annoying of the new companions and of the old ones, the preachy Sarah Jane and the abrasive Teagan both could make your teeth grind.

If they bring back a single epi companion it should be Lady De Souza (Michele Ryan) from the Planet of the Dead epi, her style may have been a bit much lara croft, but she could make any episode fun.

Other than the first part of the first sentence, I disagree with every line.

CAPALDI IS AWESOME

I don't see how anyone could not like the new direction. Hilarious, very satirical. Great change.

I agree and I'm a big matt smith fan. He did a good matt smith impression early on, then slowly evolved into the angry Scottish, unpredictable doctor who stole every scene. Very excited about the new direction.
Spoilers:

I loved the many self aware references to prior episodes, prior doctors, capaldi's prior guest appearance, fan complaints about recent doctors, etc. It reminded me of one of my favorite moments of the new era:

Interesting question with the woman at the end. She's probably someone new but it occurred to me it could be a wide range of characters we know, such as the valeyard, romana, river song (doubtful), the master (doubtful). I had forgotten about the phone number being written down in St. John. (Actually I realized I never saw the opening scenes to St. John. Queen Elizabeth was saying merry christmas for the first 15 minutes when I saw it on Christmas morning)

End spoilers.

IMO,she's either the Rani or a fricked up regeneration of Susan

I like both of those too, and Rani is probably the most plausible out of all.

And the Rani was previously in an old Who episode featuring a T. Rex. Maybe it was a hint.

For the next ep, I just want the Daleks to go back to being Daleks. Start fricking exterminating things. New-Who Season 1+2 Daleks, not shitty, tea-serving, stealthy Daleks.

I really liked the new episode. Showed me a lot of potential for how the new Doctor will be. I'm excited, definitely want to rewatch it again a few times to see some scenes and subtext I might have missed on. My perception of the show always changes/evolves after I see it again.

Though I can see myself liking this Doctor more than any of the rest. Smith and Tennant were both energetic when solving problems and crushing bad guys. But Capaldi is older and I think he's going to be more cerebral and witty when solving problems. The part when he left Clara behind on purpose showed a huge difference between him and the past doctors. I also think this episode might have been Clara's best. She was always a badass before, but she's going to take it to another level this season.

Just watched this on DVR tonight. Wow it started off fricking slow. Real slow. It finally got rolling and was good. I still don't fully understand wtf is going on, but I'm getting into it.

Also, it seems it was a big deal about the lizard lady's lesbian kiss with her wife. Was I the only one strangely aroused by this?

Only pic I could find....
