I just started watching so no spoilers please. I am almost finished with season 1.

I was watching yesterday and my wife, who has never seen it, noticed and told me she heard it was a chick show.

I knew very little about the series before I started watching. I guess I can see why someone would think that. But I just started it.

No not exclusively at all. If anything I would think a chick would have less to relate to Don with.

Also, as I came to realize, you have to power through season 1 and most of season 2 before I really feel like the show gets going. I was almost bored to tears the first few episodes, which are not indicative of the whole series.

I don't see it. I guess if you consider anything that doesn't have action a "chick show" then it'd qualify. But when I think "chick show", I think overly dramatic/emotional soap opera-esque drama like Grey's Anatomy. Mad Men is just a well-written drama with characters that appeal to both men and women.

I wouldn't call it a chick show.

But I think a lot of women fantasized about being Draper's lover.

Nope. I like the business stuff but there are chick angles too.

In other words it was meant to appeal to a diverse audience.

I've never once considered it a chick show and I've seen every episode. The women are treated like crap for the most part, and most of the male characters are a "man's man." Don boozes heavily and cheats on his wife constantly. How is that a chick show?

Most women I have tried to get into it regarded it as a "sexist chauvinist" show. It's really a commentary on those things, not a celebration of them, but it's hard to get anyone who has already formed a pre-judgement like that to change their mind. So, no. My experience is the opposite, though if you've actually watched it, you know that it is a drama with broad appeal. There are characters and situations that women would find interesting and identify with just as there are elements that appeal to male viewers. Contrast that with Gray's Anatomy, which is exclusively for women.

Call it what you want, but it's a great frickin show.

Now go tell your wife that all her dreams are silly and that she needs to cook you a steak tonight.

In essence it is a night time drama. Essentially a soap opera. Like Dallas in the 80's.

That being said, it illustrates misogyny of the time. There is a lot of fashion in the show which women may find cool, but it is only for authenticity of the show. Illustrating what women of the time, and women of means, would wear in New York.

Later seasons some women become more powerful, but not really.

If anything Mad Men has given rise to a few manly things. Or at least had a part. Cocktails (Old Fashioned), old school barbering and shaving, Fedoras (though much more hipster).

It is a soap opera essentially. But it is the greatest one ever made. By a landslide.

Its a soap opera for women who are tired of the modern femized man. Some men also like it for the same reason.

No, it's way too in-depth for that to be true. I would argue that the show is, at its core, a study of the nature and changing face of masculinity in America. I would imagine that is still a compelling storyline for women, but it is not "chick show" material.

I initially thought it was a chick show and didn't have any interest in watching it. I caught one episode and thought it was interesting, so decided to watch it. It's a great drama and would not at all consider it a chick show.
